Market Street Newbury Closure

Market Street closure between West Berkshire Council Office and Mayor’s Lane (opposite Vue Cinema) in Newbury started today and will last until 1 December. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible or allow extra time for their journeys and Kennections bus service will be affected.

The closure is required to install a new sewer to serve the 200 new homes as part of the multi-million pound regeneration of the Market Street area.

The diversion routes are available to view online (Market Street Closure) and are as follows:

Clockwise: Cheap Street, Bear Lane, A339 (southbound), St John’s Road, Newtown Road and Batholomew Street

Anti-clockwise: Bartholomew Street, Newtown Road, A339 (northbound) and Cheap Street

The new traffic lights at the Sainsbury’s roundabout will help to keep traffic on the diversion route flowing.

Motorists should note that access to Northbrook Street will be subject to current restrictions (closed 10am to 5pm), access to the Kennet Centre car park will be via Bartholomew Street and exit onto Market Street, and access to the Kennet Centre service ramp will be available 24/7.

The road closure will affect Kennections services coming into Newbury town centre from the south of Newbury.  Kennections 2 and 3 will be diverted over this period and Kennections 4 and 6 will not serve Newbury Railway Station for the duration. Detailed information and updates about this closure can be found here – www.westberks.gov.uk/transportchanges. Information will also be posted on affected bus stops around Newbury Town Centre and on social media. Services operated by other bus companies will be making their own arrangements so contact the operator directly.

Speaking ahead of the closure Councillor Richard Somner, Executive Member for Transport, said: “This road closure is needed to allow some important infrastructure to be laid for the next stage of the Market Street regeneration. Our Highways team have worked very hard to complete the A339 improvement works before this closure comes into effect and this will help the situation.

“I know motorists never welcome news of roadworks but the Council works hard to balance the need for utility works as well as its own highways improvements programme. Every year the Council receives thousands of requests from utility companies wanting to work on roads in West Berkshire. We work hard to coordinate this work to keep our roads moving and minimise the impact on motorists.”

Motorists are thanked in advance for their patience while these essential works on Market Street are completed.

All enquiries should be directed to Cappagh on 0208 947 4000 option 3.

General Road Information

StreetworksRoadworks.org and one.network provide essentially the same information about roadworks and traffic incidents but their interfaces and functionality differs.

Traffic Update provides similar information but the site is harder to search in rural areas (though you can find information on specific trunk roads easily using the menu at the top).

For information generally on major road projects, please visit the Highways England website.

Waze App gives you the best route in real time with help from fellow drivers

West Berkshire Council, Swindon Council, and Wiltshire Council have links to maps of their areas showing roadworks and delays. The Vale of White Horse Council’s section is rather less useful.
