Once celebrated throughout the country and first recorded in the twelfth century, Hocktide or ‘Tutti Day’ was held on the second Tuesday after Easter. It was an important holiday and rare day off for the villeins from working the land and allowed them to let their hair down after Lent.
The tradition of Hocktide now only remains in Hungerford and is The Town and Manor of Hungerford’s most important event of the year.
On the Sunday following comes the Constable’s Parade. The Constable was the head of the Feeofees who managed the Commoner’s Rights, land, law and order for centuries and carried a symbolic horn.
