A Summer Reading Celebration

19 July @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Friday 19 July 2024   6:30pm – 8:30pm.

Hungerford Bookshop 24 High Street Hungerford RG17 0NF.

Our annual Summer in the Courtyard. This year featuring Lucy Atkins, Vanessa de Haan, Jackie Fraser & Ben Aitken + Booksellers.

A highlight in the bookshop calendar! Our annual Summer Reading Celebration returns. Four authors have ten minutes each to tell you about their books, and some of our booksellers also share thair favourire reads of the year so far. Plus lashings of Pimms, nibbles, free proofs (pre-publication copies of books) and bookish chat. More treats as we think of them.

This year’s authors are:

Ben Aitken:

Author of The Gran Tour and The Marmalade Diaries, Here Comes the Fun is Ben’s latest non-fiction foray.

Increasingly flat and decreasingly zen, Ben gave boredom the boot and stress the cold shoulder by embarking on a whimsical journey into the serious business of having a laugh. He did a pilgrimage in Spain, a summer camp in Kent, and a cruise of the Baltic with 2,000 grannies.

And when he wasn’t on the road, he searched for merriment at home: by giving bridge a go, volunteering a chance, and gardening a crack of the whip. By incorporating the thoughts of key thinkers and boffins, Here Comes the Fun offers a satisfying balance of the playful and the profound, the serious and the silly, the daft and the deep.

Lucy Atkins:

Lucy Atkins is an award-winning British author who has written five novels, most recently WINDMILL HILL (2023), a summer book pick for both the Guardian and the Observer. Her previous novel, MAGPIE LANE (2020), was a Book of the Year for the Guardian,  Telegraph, Good Housekeeping, and BBC Radio 4 Open Book.

Lucy will be talking about Windmill Hill. Astrid, lives with her house-keeper turned best friend, Mrs Baker, in a dilapidated windmill. Are these two ‘old ladies’ really as innocent and vulnerable as they seem? Filled with humour and mystery this is part thriller part love story – a captivating exploration of unseen lives, the histories that shape us, and the unyielding strength of two indomitable women.

Vanessa de Haan:

Vanessa is a historical fiction author, as well as a freelance journalist and editor. In 2005 she left an in-house job at The Spectator magazine in London and moved to Devon to concentrate on her own writing. A Time to Live is her second novel sweeping from the smoking battlefields of France to the rich estates of Devon, from Suffragettes to political extremists, this is a story of legacy and scars, of the price of change, the price of family…

Jackie Fraser:

Jackie is a freelance editor working on food, travel and fiction titles, and a novelist. Her first novel was The Bookshop of Second Chances – an uplifting read with a setting that gets our vote! Her latest, The Beginning of Everything is the story of Jess and Gethin, whose paths cross in the most unexpected way. Jess is running, leaving all she knows and everyone she loves behind her, with just a few treasured belongings in her rucksack.

She’s escaping from the pain and trauma of a bad relationship with a bad man, gone very badly wrong. Gethin’s kindness and care takes her breath away. They become friends. But with so much hurt in her past, can Jess learn to love and live again?
