Newbury Town Council’s Climate-change Community Workshop @ Newbury Town Hall
Sep 28 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Newbury Town Council's Climate-change Community Workshop @ Newbury Town Hall | England | United Kingdom

Since declaring a climate emergency on 10th June 2019, the Town Council’s Climate Emergency Working Group (CEWG) has been exploring measures to transition Newbury Town Council’s operations to net zero for carbon emissions.

The CEWG has commissioned a full carbon audit of the carbon emissions from the Council’s day operations at the Town Hall. This audit will establish a baseline figure from which the Council will reduce its impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

The CEWG has also proposed two interim initiatives ahead of the publication of the audit:

1. A community workshop on 28th September at the Town Hall (2pm to 5pm).

Members of local environmental groups, other community groups and individual members of the public are invited to help consider measures that will ensure Newbury Town Council can achieve its net-zero target and discuss how to facilitate similar carbon reduction measures in the wider community. The workshop will include updates from Councillors and Officers on the need to become carbon neutral, where we are now and suggestions on the next steps. This will be followed by group discussions to gather feedback and further ideas.

2. A proposal to create a Green Directory, listing local businesses and organisations that are environmentally friendly.

This directory would allow residents to make sustainable/environmentally friendly decisions when making purchases, encouraging a shift to a greener economy. It is hoped that members of the community will participate in the formulation of the directory to ensure it reflects growing awareness of green issues in the local economy.

Chairperson of the CEWG Cllr Chris Foster said, “The impacts of the climate crisis will be felt right across our community. We must therefore take on board as wide a range of views as we can, that’s why the proposed workshop will form a key part of the Climate Emergency Working Group’s proposals. We’re also keen to learn from the great work already being done by local environmental groups and ask how we as Newbury Town Council can help facilitate this.”

Deputy Chairperson, Cllr Steve Masters said, “In just two months Newbury Town Council has shown it is serious in its ambition to ensure its operations transition to a net zero carbon level. The audit is vital to ensure we know where we are currently and offers a target towards which we can work. The community workshop is recognition that we must ensure a transparent process and ensures we bring the community along as partners in this vital initiative.”

Step Up 4 Good 10k and Family Fun Runs 2019 @ Newbury Racecourse
Oct 13 @ 9:00 am

Step Up 4 Good 2019 is our fourth year and sees a transformation of venue, taking our annual Autumn race from the dramatic terrain of Greenham Common, to the state-of-the-art Newbury Racecourse on Sunday 13th October. Our popular event consists of three distances, starting with the Family-Mile/Para-Mile, 3K Fun Run and the Big 10K race, all taking place within the safe environment of Newbury Racecourse.

New for 2019 we are offering a unique all-inclusive event, for children under the age of 15. Those with a disability or impairment will have the opportunity to run/jog/walk a mile at their own pace after the Family-Mile runners have commenced and it is completely free to enter, thanks to sponsor – Swift Group, Newbury. We are very excited to be able to offer this and have received great support from UKA, Run Together, Activity Alliance, Sport in Mind and local ambassadors to raise awareness for disabled children in sport. Step Up 4 Good is a great challenge for children of all abilities, to enter and train towards.

Our popular 3K Fun Run is back by demand and is open to both adults and older children. This takes place on tarmac, there is no running on grass! There is also plenty of space for spectators to watch their little ones run by and cheer them along from the comfort of the undercover Grandstand.

The Big 10K race is a scenic single loop on road and hard packed paths, in and around the perimeter of the racecourse. The course is quick, flat and ideal for PB’s. Run under UK Athletics rules, it is a new fast race for competitive club athletes and aspiring runners looking for a scenic and friendly event. The route is fully marshalled, marked in kilometres, with a water station at the half way point. Every paid entry receives a personalised bib, chip-timing, tech t-Shirt and finisher medal.

Our indoor event village will be filled with a wonderful community buzz. Packed full of local charities, delicious food, refreshments, music and entertainment and lots more. Located at the iconic Racecourse, it’s going to be an exciting family event, with time to jog round with the kids and then run your own timed race, before finishing the day browsing the various stalls and food outlets within the Grandstand building. Run for fun or raise money for local community projects in the build up to race day. Greenham Trust wants to encourage every runner and supporter to get behind a local project, charity or appeal, or even register your own project as a fundraiser on The Good Exchange platform.

Lots of schools use our event as a fundraising opportunity. Greenham Trust are again giving local state primary and secondary schools, the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win £500 for a project of their choice. Each state school who registers 10 or more pupils to run, will automatically be entered into a prize draw for £500. So get your school signed up today, to be in with a chance of winning! Also new this year is our informative ‘Schools Toolkit’ available on our website. This offers a quick step-by-step guide for teachers and parents, with links to a selection of downloadable resources to make the organisation quick and simple. The entry process is now much quicker for groups and schools too, as you will see on the entryhub, the facility to add multiple runner entries in one transaction, is simple and easy to use.

We will also draw our third Golden Ticket during the trophy presentations. Each paid runner will be entered into a prize draw and the lucky winner will be invited to nominate a project on The Good Exchange, to receive £5000 in funding from Greenham Trust.

We are working with some of the best industry professionals – Racesolutions (Endure24/Royal Berks 10K)  and Eventrex, to make Step Up 4 Good 2019 bigger and better and we would love to see as many local schools as possible taking part. This event is a valuable addition to Greenham Trust’s annual community calendar, encouraging people to become more active and bringing individuals from all walks of life and abilities together, to raise money for charitable causes.

Help us make this Newbury’s biggest and most fun family running event!
