VE Day 75th Anniversary @ West Berkshire Museum
May 8 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
VE Day 75th Anniversary @ West Berkshire Museum | England | United Kingdom

VE Day 75th Anniversary

Join us to celebrate and commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day. We’ll be hosting our VEDay75 event with a variety of FREE drop-in activities themed around 1940s Britain. Bunting, made by local schools, will decorate the museum reception, 1940s food will be on offer in the café with a gramophone playing songs from the era, and turning up in 1940s costume is encouraged; anyone who does will get a complimentary sweet treat! In addition, there will be craft activities for the children throughout the day (including making an air raid shelter, aviator goggles and Union flag), sing-a-longs (set times to be announced), as well as an opportunity to try a brand new themed walking trail of Newbury.

Friday 8 May | Drop in 10am – 3pm | West Berkshire Museum  | Free

Shaw House Open Days @ Shaw House | Newbury | England | United Kingdom

Shaw House Open Days

Join us for the Shaw House Open Days where you will have the opportunity to access many areas of the House which are not normally open to the public, including the ‘Forbidden Corridor’ on the second floor, the basement tunnel running along the length of the House and a rare chance to view the Elizabethan *bake house (*viewings £2 per person and must be pre-booked).

The bake house was discovered during the restoration of Shaw House and is one of the very special features of the House. Public access is not usually possible due to its location below the café but during the open days you will have the chance to climb below the ground floor and discover the well preserved elements of the 16th century kitchen.

You can also visit the exhibition rooms and the Open Studio’s outdoor sculpture trail.

Please note that the café service on these days will be limited in order to create safe access to the bake house.

Entry to the House, grounds and exhibition rooms is free.

Bake house viewings: 11.30, 12.30, 13.30 & 14.30 | £2 per person

Booking to view the bake house is essential and spaces will be limited.  To book call Shaw House 01635 279279, online bookings available from January 2020.

Access is via a descending  fixed ladder which has a handrail on both sides. Anyone booking to visit the bake house must be physically capable of completing this manoeuvre as there is no alternative entry/exit. If you would like more access information please contact shawhouse@westberks.gov.uk
