Everybody is enthusing about the programme for the 42nd Newbury Spring Festival. One of the most popular and successful festivals in the South of England, this is a chance to see world-class artists on your doorstep at a snip of London prices. Followers of the two-week international Newbury Spring Festival already appreciate the programme of internationally renown artists but there has never been a better opportunity for newcomers to give it a go and experience the thrill of live music.

There is a lot going on during the fortnight so here is an easy ways to find the best events for you:

Family Activity Day – Cloves

Using colouring pens and stickers, decorate a fan using a design inspired by Indonesian patterns and prints.

This summers are craft days are themed around the places that some of the spices were collected from in Elizabethan times. There is also a free Elizabethan spice trail to do as you explore the House, or a big bug hunt in the gardens.

For 4-11 year olds but younger and older children are welcome.  No need to book, drop in.

Family Activity Day – Black pepper

The national bird of India is a peacock so we’ll be using Deco pens to paint a picture of this bird’s colourful feathers on a rock using real examples of the feathers, so you’ll have a beautiful ornament or paperweight to take home.

Also, colour-in a wooden garden stake to use with the Growing2gether activity outside in the kitchen garden from 10.30am to 3pm. Join Growing2gether in planting some fast growing rocket to take home to then harvest for your salad. You can also smell and taste other Elizabethan herbs and discover their many uses.

Growing2gether are a small local charity providing work experience and training to adults with learning disabilities as well as family fun days and a thriving toddler group open to all.

You can do all the activities today for the usual charge of £2 per child.

For 4-11 year olds but younger and older children are welcome. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No need to book, drop in

Make your own dragon, inspired by the dragons in Saxon art and stories, from a variety of craft materials. For inspiration, you can visit the permanent exhibition to view the small scrolled dragon tongue on display.

Make a giant seal out of air-drying clay, design your own emblem on it and then paint it with glossy paint.  You can then use it at home to place on items you wish to keep private and secure as that was one of the original purposes of a seal (to secure letters).

Summer Messy Museum Days – Marvellous masks

Decorate a face mask with Deco pens and a variety of other craft materials, and find out about the Elizabethan masque when these masks were worn; a masque would have included dancing and acting. Once you’ve made your mask, you can put on your own masque at home.

Please dress for mess with all these activities. Aprons will be available and you are welcome to bring your own.
