Alice through the wardrobe

Speaker: David Willetts

Alice Chaucer was the grand-daughter of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer and lived at one time at Donnington Castle. A redoubtable woman who first married at the age of 11, she later became s duchess and a Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, an honour rarely granted to women.

Mayors of Newbury

Speaker: Anthony Pick

Newbury’s mayors enjoyed significant power in the past, heading the corporation of 24 burgesses and acting as the town’s chief magistrate. Anthony Pick will highlight some of the more interesting and unusual characters who have held this office.

Branch meetings are continuing as Zoom webinars.
