Make a giant seal out of air-drying clay, design your own emblem on it and then paint it with glossy paint.  You can then use it at home to place on items you wish to keep private and secure as that was one of the original purposes of a seal (to secure letters).

For 4-11 year olds but younger and older children are welcome.

Starting in the Market Place, the site of the Guildhall, the stocks and Queen Victoria’s statue, and then following a path towards the railway station, including the site of the building where Lord Falkland stayed before the First Battle of Newbury.

David Peacock researches, writes and lectures on the history of the Newbury area. He is the author of The Story of Newbury (2011), has written for local newspapers, taught evening classes, and given talks to many clubs and societies.

Today’s Indonesian-inspired craft will be to make a puppet from card, a straw and paint sticks.

This summers are craft days are themed around the places that some of the spices were collected from in Elizabethan times. There is also a free Elizabethan spice trail to do as you explore the House, or a big bug hunt in the gardens.

Heritage Walk: Tudor Newbury

A walk to explore Newbury in the 16th century, when the cloth industry was thriving locally, visiting historic locations and surviving buildings.  It includes the Guildhall which used to stand in the middle of the Market Place, a visit to St Nicolas Church (built in the reign of Henry VIII, and the place where the Newbury martyrs were tried in Queen Mary’s reign); to the site of the West Mills (where cloth was processed and finished); and to the surviving part of Jack of Newbury’s house, just off Northbrook Street.

Decorate a face mask with Deco pens and a variety of other craft materials, and find out about the Elizabethan masque when these masks were worn; a masque would have included dancing and acting. Once you’ve made your mask, you can put on your own masque at home.

Please dress for mess with all these activities. Aprons will be available and you are welcome to bring your own.

Heritage Walk: In the Footsteps of Newbury’s Artists

Many local residents have put paint to canvas over the years, some with commercial success, others to little acclaim, some of notable quality, and others more enthusiastic than meritorious. Between them they created a body of work that reflected their times, including scenes of Newbury from before the advent of photography. This walk will tell the stories of some of these artists, and will show examples of their work in locations around the town centre relevant to their lives.

 

YOUR GUIDE:

Jane Burrell is a former curator of West Berkshire Museum. She divides her time between local history research, poetry of the Great War, and theology.

James explains where they live, how they fly in the dark, and why they are so important and protected by law. Open Air Sculpture Exhibition: Rescheduled

The Orangery Lawn at Shaw House will be transformed into a sculpture exhibition where you can discover artworks by acclaimed sculptors in this lovely historic setting.

This exhibition has been rescheduled from the originally advertised date of May 2020. Sculptures will be well spaced apart to allow social distancing in the grounds. Please do not touch the sculptures.

All works on display will be available for purchase.

Open times Saturday 5 – Sunday 27 Sept, 11am – 4pm.

Monday to Friday: Visitors will have access to the grounds only. Toilets will be available. We ask you to please respect the space around those celebrating their weddings and other ceremonies within the House.

Weekends: The House and grounds will be available. The shop and café will be open. The café will be running a take-out service. Toilets will be available and we will have limits on single person/households in the lifts.

A two hour walk from the Royalist positions on the eve of battle, through ‘no man’s land’ to where parliament gained a foothold on the high ground at Round Hill. Examining the strategies, weapons and outcomes of one of the civil wars most pivotal battles and visiting the location where Lord Falkland met his death.

 

YOUR GUIDE:

Dave Stubbs was for many years the ‘local bobby’ at Wash Common – his interest in local history awakened by digging up a civil war musket ball in his back garden. He has accumulated a wealth

of local lore which he loves sharing through talks and guided walks.
