Hungerford Town & Manor Open Forum Evening @ The Town Hall
Nov 29 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Hungerford Town & Manor Open Forum Evening @ The Town Hall | England | United Kingdom

The ancient charity of the Town & Manor of Hungerford is holding its first ever Open Forum evening at the Town Hall from 7 to 9pm on Thursday 29 November.

The forum will give residents of Hungerford the opportunity to find out about the activities that the Trustees of the Town & Manor undertakes on behalf of the Commoners. The evening will consist of short presentations about the Common, the Town Hall and the fishery, along with the history of Hocktide and the role of the Town & Manor in Hungerford.

The Constable of the Town & Manor, Ellie Dickins said, “As the first of its kind, this will be an historic meeting. The purpose is to inform the residents of Hungerford exactly what it is that the Town & Manor does and to answer questions regarding their work for the town. I warmly invite everyone in the town to come and join me, for what I hope will be an informative and interesting evening.”

How Shostakovich Changed My Mind @ The Croft Hall
Feb 2 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm
How Shostakovich Changed My Mind @ The Croft Hall

‘There’s something about hearing your most painful emotions transformed into something beautiful..’ The old Russian who uttered those words spoke for countless fellow survivors of Stalin’s reign of terror. And the ‘something beautiful’ he had in mind was the music of Dmitri Shostakovich.

BBC music broadcaster Stephen Johnson – “the authoritative British voice of classical music” (Michael Tumelty) – will be talking about the power of Shostakovich’s music during Stalin’s reign of terror, and looking at the extraordinary healing effect of music on sufferers of mental illness. He asks how is it that music that reflects pain, fear and desolation can help sufferers find – if not a way out, then a way to bear these feelings and ultimately rediscover pleasure in existence?

Johnson will draw on his own personal experiences, and the talk will be complemented by pieces of Shostakovich’s music. Afterwards he take will be happy to take questions from the audience and sign copies of which will be available to buy on the night.

“Stephen Johnson is one of our most sensitive and thoughtful music critics, and this book, written from the heart about a composer whom he loves and admires, will prove to be a landmark in the understanding of its subject” – Sir Roger Scruton

Mar 16 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Stories from Real Life - Turning Family History into Fiction @ The Wheatsheaf, Chilton Foliat

One day writing workshop suitable for all levels

Are there some great stories lurking in your family history? Would you like to write something inspired by real-life events from your own life or someone in your family? Whether you have aspirations to write fiction or biography, this workshop will provide you with the essential techniques required to turn your writing goals into reality and send you home with the outline of a new project.

Author of the critically acclaimed Miss Boston and Miss Hargreaves, Rachel Malik brings her skills as a writer and former lecturer in English at Middlesex University to lead a full day workshop using family history or true-life events as the inspiration for a work of fiction. Miss Boston and Miss Hargreaves was inspired when Rachel Malik discovered an incredible story from her Grandmother’s past. Her novel – which was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction – was partially written in Hungerford, and the surrounding area inspired parts of the novel. For this reason we thought it fitting to hold this special event in West Berkshire.

Our events provide a friendly and supportive environment for experienced writers looking to make progress on their projects. At the same time, the day is designed for people who just like to have fun with words. Expect lots of short writing exercises, leading to the creation of a 100 word story inspired by a family event or a character from your life.

World Gin Day & Open Garden at Mount Prosperous @ Mount Prosperous Garden, nr Hungerford | England | United Kingdom

Celebrate World Gin Day at Mount Prosperous Garden, nr Hungerford, RG17 0RP

8th June 12.00-5.00 – £8.00 adults, children free

Mount Prosperous has not been opened to the general public for 12 years. Here is an opportunity to visit a quintessential English country garden of about 4 acres. Once the home to the 18th century agricultural reformer Jethro Tull.

The gardens have been developed and improved substantially over the last 20 years and include herbaceous borders, pond, cascade, walled rose garden, Italian pool garden, vegetable plot, wildflower meadow and woodland walk. Also the only full size replica of Jethro’s seed drill.

Teas, Gin, BBQ and craft stalls. Why not enjoy a nice glass of G & T whilst enjoying the fabulous garden and views of the rural countryside?

All profit to Shalbourne Village Hall (registered charity) to continue the improvements.
