Hungerford Wednesday Market @ Hungerford High Street
Jan 15 @ 7:00 am – 2:30 pm
Hungerford Wednesday Market @ Hungerford High Street | England | United Kingdom

Wednesday is market day in Hungerford, when cars give way to shoppers, traders and stalls filled with fresh fruit, vegetable, fish, meat, flowers, plants, clothes, fabrics, collectables and more.

You’ll find the Hungerford Charter Market on the High Street just outside the Town Hall, starting early in the morning and packing away early afternoon. Don’t forget to check the Town Hall Steps and Magistrates Room, as both are often hired for indoor sales, are are very popular for arts and crafts markets.

If you’d like a stall at the weekly Charter market, please speak to Darren on the Flower Stall.

Did you know… Hungerford is believed to have first held a market in 1248 during the reigh of Henry III. In 1296, Edward I confirmed in writing the rights to hold a market.

Hattie Briggs + Joe Hicks @ ACE Space
Jan 17 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Hattie Briggs

Hattie Briggs is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist influenced by Joni Mitchell, Foy Vance, Goldfrapp and Jeff Buckley. Hattie writes and sings straight from the heart, bringing together pop, folk and electronic influences, which she delivers with honesty and intent.
Since making the decision to drop out of a Russian degree in her second year at Oxford University, Hattie has released several EPs, two critically acclaimed albums, played live and been interviewed on national television (BBC Breakfast), had airplay on BBC Radios 1, 2, and 6 Music, and embarked on tours around the UK, the Netherlands and the U.S. Indeed, she has clocked up playing at over 500 gigs since 2014. In October 2018 a chance encounter whist busking at Paddington station resulted in a 21 show tour opening for platinum-selling singer, Alfie Boe. The finale of the tour was at the Royal Albert Hall at which she and her band received a standing ovation. Alfie said “I found Hattie busking in Paddington station, a beautiful little moment, it was wonderful, a peaceful moment within the chaos of London, a poignant moment that stuck in my mind and so I invited her on tour… I want her to go with her music and fly”

Joe Hicks

Newbury Singer-Songwriter Joe Hicks blends pop, blues and folk influences, combining intricate guitar composition with classic pop song-craft. Having made a name for himself as a session guitarist, Hicks released his first solo single at the start of 2017 following a soul searching writing trip to a secluded Cornish Airbnb garage with no internet or phone signal. Since then Joe has racked up over 1 Million digital streams, was made ‘BBC Introducing Artist of the Week’ across the U.K Radio, has toured the UK, Spain and Germany including a slot supporting BRIT award winner Sam Fender in Oxford and played over 25 Sofar Sounds shows.

Community Apple Tree Pruning Day at Digby Road Community Orchard in Newbury @ Digby Road Community Orchard
Jan 18 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Community Apple Tree Pruning Day at Digby Road Community Orchard in Newbury @ Digby Road Community Orchard

The Newbury in Bloom team together with Growing Newbury Green are hosting a community apple tree pruning day at the Digby Road Community Orchard with support from Newbury Town Council.

Volunteers are asked to come along, bring their secateurs, learn how to prune with the onsite experts. Pruning helps to shape a tree, making it easier to maintain and keeps it healthy by removing any dead, diseased or damaged wood. It also allows more sunlight to reach the ripening fruits.

To find the orchard:

From the BathRoad/A4 turn left into Brummel Road at The Starting Gate Pub, then turn right into Berchill Road, then right into Digby Road, go to the end of the first section and turn left and follow that right to the end where there is a small parking area next to the orchard. But you might need to park on Digby Road itself.

The Vagina Dialogues Motivational Event for Women @ Hungerford Town Hall
Jan 18 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
The Vagina Dialogues Motivational Event for Women @ Hungerford Town Hall | England | United Kingdom

Ladies, do you want to  start the New Year off with some clarity, focus and renewed confidence in yourself?

Then this event will be right up your street!  Bring a friend for FREE.

The Vagina Dialogues is a unique event for women which looks at the mothering role and how the relationship with our mothers affects us all profoundly, whether we go on to become mothers or not. It provides an opportunity for reflection, increased self-awareness and clarity about who we are and the importance of our role as women in the 21st C. It has been running on a regular basis since 2013.

The relaxed format of part-presentation and part-discussion enables women of all ages to come together and share their insights and experience of being mothered/being a mother in a supportive, fun and interesting way.  So far the age range of the participants has been between 14 and 88, and the event has been held in various cities all over the UK, Sweden and Brisbane, Australia.  It’s an event that you can come to time and time again….there’s obviously a structure to the evening but there are always new people in the room who ask different questions/bring different insights.  It’s like reading a book which you pick up again in six months time and think, “How on earth did I miss that!”

Ladies, bring your female friends, colleagues and family – come along even/especially if you’re not a mother – you were mothered and have that experience and insight to contribute. You may learn something that could change your life, or even better, maybe you’ll inspire someone else. Guaranteed thought-provoking and FUN – see you there.

Lis and the team x

NB ~ BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL FOR THIS EVENT  tickets cost £57 and you can bring a friend for free! there won’t be tickets available on the door.  Also,  please note that tickets ARE NON-REFUNDABLE once issued – if you find yourself unable to come, please gift your ticket to a friend or colleague.

WARNING! NB: One VERY important thing to note, this event isn’t for everyone. Come if you’re female and over 14, you’re non-judgmental, curious and have an open mind – oh, and you want to make a difference in the world :

PS! This event has nothing to do with the Vagina Monologues show.  This event is unique, and the best possible description is it’s a respectful, facilitated conversation – isn’t that what’s missing in today’s society?

If you’re interested in the underlying philosophy of the event, then, watch the next two videos….only 220 secs required to watch both… we’ve packed a LOT into them!

Hungerford Wassail @ The Cider Barn, Hungerford Park | England | United Kingdom

Wrap up warm, bring your family and be prepared for some traditional New Year fun as we banish evil spirits and awaken the tree spirits. If you play a musical instrument, bring it along, or bring pots and pans to bash – we need to make as much noise as possible! We will walk around the orchard, blessing the trees and singing.

Garston Gallopers will be morris dancing, there will be mulled apple juice to toast the trees and quench the thirst after all the singing and pot bashing.

Find out who finds the bean in their fruit cake to be crowned King and Queen to conduct the ceremony.

Bring any lanterns from the Extravaganza.

See here for more about the tradition of wassailing!
