Who Needs Geologists? The Role of Geology in the Energy Transition with Mike Simmons

Although geology may bring to mind the study of dinosaurs, volcanoes, and plate tectonics, the majority of geologists are engaged in activities which help find energy, mineral, and water resources that are essential for society, but which may have major environmental impacts. So how will geologists’ roles change as we move to a low carbon economy? Come along and judge for yourself if they are “the good guys” or “the bad guys” in developing a prosperous, yet sustainable, global society.

Mike Simmons works as a geologist for Halliburton at Milton Park and holds honorary positions at the University of London and the Natural History Museum.

Heritage Walk: Wartime Newbury

A guided walk within the largely pedestrian town centre to see the sites which played a part in the two World Wars. We shall see where the film ‘The Battle of the Somme’ was shown in 1916, where the Lord Mayor’s coach was stored during WWII, and why the Emergency Bridge was constructed. Buildings, street corners and river banks have a story to tell.

YOUR GUIDE:

Jane Burrell is a former curator of West Berkshire Museum. She divides her time between local history research, poetry of the Great War, and theology. Each walk lasts about 1½ hours and has limited spaces. Bespoke walks can be arranged. Please note: Walks start at the Corn Exchange, except for the Wash Common walks.

Heritage Walk: Pubs Past & Present @ Corn Exchange
Aug 5 @ 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Heritage Walk: Pubs Past & Present @ Corn Exchange | England | United Kingdom

Heritage Walk: Pubs Past & Present

This walk will be a stroll around the town centre looking at the history of many existing

pubs and a far larger number of those that are no longer with us. Many will remember the Clock Tower or the George & Pelican, fewer will remember the Anchor or the George & Dragon, and no one alive will have frequented the Town Arms or the Royal Exchange. Tales of murder and tragedy, of coaching inns and carriers’ haunts – a potted history of the licensed trade in Newbury from the 1600s to today.

YOUR GUIDE:

Phil researches, writes and lectures on the history of Newbury and family history. He is President of the Newbury District Field Club (the town’s local history society); his particular interests are the pubs and breweries of Newbury and the war memorials of West Berkshire.

Each walk lasts about 1½ hours and has limited spaces. Bespoke walks can be arranged. Please note: Walks start at the Corn Exchange, except for the Wash Common walks

Aug 8 @ 10:00 am – 10:00 pm
Mike Hawthorne's 12 Hour Gig-a-thon in aid of small local charities

Weʼre raising £2,000 to help small, West Berkshire-based charities by doing a 12 hour non-stop Gig-a-thon!

Did you know that 90% of charitable donations goes to only 6.6% of charities in the UK – the big ones that can afford to promote themselves? In an effort to try and redress the balance a bit, local guitar teacher Mike Hawthorne started supporting local small charities alongside his a Sing-Along project during the UK’s Covid-19 lockdown response. Since that time, he has promoted 14 different small charities local to West Berkshire.

As the country moves out of lockdown, and things start to get back to normal, these charities will need help to get back to their regular operation.

The main charitable focus now for these sing-alongs is to work up towards the sponsored 12 hour Gig-a-Thon which I will be doing on Saturday 8 August from 10am to 10pm so please stay tuned for more info on that.

I have set up a JustGiving page to collect sponsorship funds for that event, and that’s here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/singalongwithmike2020

Please take a bit of time to check out the charities I’ve supported so far on this journey:
