Thatcham Sustainable Living Market @ Thatcham Baptist Church
Jul 20 @ 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Thatcham Sustainable Living Market @ Thatcham Baptist Church | England | United Kingdom

Thatcham’s mission to reduce plastic waste continues on 20th July, when the third Sustainable Living Market will take place.

Thatcham Baptist church will once again be the venue for this community event. Join us for eco-friendly shopping, education/information, craft and fundraising … as well as tea and cake!  Event Flyer

The aim of the market is to provide a platform for local small independent businesses to sell and promote their products. Every stallholder must have eco-friendly credentials at the heart of their business. Local charities and community initiatives are also championed at the market, with the opportunity to fundraise and promote good causes.

The need for single-use plastic is eliminated at this event through the provision of refills from Thatcham Refillable and Lonely Lentil Zero Waste. Customers can bring along their empty household cleaning/detergent bottles to refill with Jenny Kirby’s wide range of eco-friendly & cruelty-free products. Lonely Lentil keep the cupboards of Thatcham and Newbury filled with unpackaged dry foods, herbs and spices through their pop-up shop. Lydia and Amelia will fill any jar/container with only the quantities needed, saving food waste and money.

Beeswax wraps handmade by Claire Black of Thatcham-based Little B’s will be on offer again at the market, these wraps are an ingenious alternative to cling film in the kitchen for wrapping and storing food. Claire lovingly makes her wraps out of organic cotton in various eye-catching designs, along with beeswax and jojoba. The wraps, if properly cared for, will last a year.

Other goods on offer include handmade natural deodorant packaged in cardboard tubes from Dale Campbell’s PosyLondon, plastic-free soap, shampoo and conditioner bars and a variety of upcycled jewellery and textiles.

Local food producers are also championed at The Sustainable Living Market. Beechwood free-range eggs from Hampstead Norreys and freshly-baked bread were on sale at the April event. Local honey courtesy of Ben’s Berkshire Bees is always a very popular choice amongst visitors to the market.

Recycling advice will once again be readily available from Thatcham’s resident ‘master womble’ Jana Karstova-Little. The public can bring along their recycling to the event to drop off to Jana, who runs an incredible Terracycle initiative from her home. Otherwise non-recycables such as crisp packets, used dental products and pet food packaging is collected and sent off for recycling by the company, raising money for charity ‘Canine Partners’.

In April, local aspiring Attenborough Oliver raised money for The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, his favourite endangered wildlife charity. The poster competition and ‘name the panda’ raffle helped him to raise nearly £100 for the cause! The posters submitted to the competition from local children are now being displayed to the public at Thatcham Library.

Oliver will be returning to the July market, alongside his ever supportive Mum Linda to promote recycling to the younger generation and raise more money for endangered species. A competition is being launched in local Primary schools to design a recycling poster, with the prize for the winning design donated by The Living Rainforest in Hampstead Norreys.
