Didcot Railway Push and Pull Steam Event @ Didcot Railway Center
May 25 @ 10:30 am – 4:00 pm
Didcot Railway Push and Pull Steam Event @ Didcot Railway Center | England | United Kingdom

This is a Steam Day, so you will be able to view their collections of locomotives, coaches, wagons and buildings as described in the Centre Guide and in their Guidebook (available for purchase from their shop or at the entrance) and enjoy the various facilities and exhibits.

Discover Brunel’s Broad Gauge and the 1930s Engine Shed. Visit the GWT Museum and their restoration workshops. Watch the modern pasenger and freight trains from their Picnic Area.

You can walk around the only surviving steam age loco depot in its original condition, and get up close to their large collection of locomotives which are so much more impressive when seen from ground level. Why not explore the rest of the centre including the Archie Trail, the Science Learning & Railways interactive exhibition and visit their shop and refreshment room?

In addition, you will be able to:

  • Ride in coaches from the 1930s behind some of their Great Western steam locomotives, or in their Steam Railmotor or Diesel Railcar. We have two running lines, ‘The Main Line’ and ‘The Branch Line’ with trains normally running on either or both of them. You may ride as many times as you like as there is no extra charge
  • Watch the trains go past. There are frequent journeys on their running lines so you will have plenty of opportunity to take photos from vantage points alongside the tracks as well as ride on the trains

Check their Locomotive Roster to see what we expect to be running on your next visit.

You can buy tickets online at any time prior to the day of your visit – or buy them at the entrance on arrival.

Family Nightjar Walk – Greenham Common @ Greenham Common
May 28 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Join BBOWT on this short walk to Sandleford heath (from the Pyle Hill Car park), to witness the amazing night-time antics of the nightjar – the weird churring, the bizarre wing clapping and the enigmatic “gwip” call.

Having arrived back in May from their winter holidays in Africa, these birds are now setting up territories wherever they can find suitable heathland habitat for rearing their young .

Wrap up warm for this evening walk; the ground can be uneven so sturdy footwear is essential. Insect repellent is a good idea, as is a torch for the walk back to the cars by which time it will be almost dark. Binoculars may also be useful before it gets too dark.

The event is free, but donations will be accepted on the day.

Mini Life-Savers Course @ Marlborough Rugby Football Club | England | United Kingdom

This fun, hands-on first aid session for 5 – 9 year olds is taught by Louise Worsley, a qualified, enthusiastic trainer who is an ex-secondary school teacher, a primary school mum and DBS checked. The session is tailored to the age group and is full of practicals to make them fun and memorable:

Parents are not required to stay but can use the free car park and walk 10 minutes to the lovely shops and cafes on Marlborough high street.

The cost per person includes handouts, a certificate of attendance and nut-free refreshments.

Private groups for any ages can also be arranged so do get in touch if this date is not suitable.
