The Shifford Group of RDA Carriage Driving for the disabled is now located at Charney Bassett, Oxon.
We are very small and friendly organisation. We drive with our disabled participants on Wednesday mornings from April to October. Our pleasure drives are on village roads and on tracks around the small holding that is our venue. When we are out on the road we need support vehicles fore and aft, and volunteers on bikes to alert the traffic to our presence.
Our participants are adults and teenagers with a variety of disabilities. They are always accompanied in the carriage by a coach and both the coach and the ponies are assessed by the Riding for Disabled Association for suitability and competence. Our four wheeled carriage has a rear ramp to allow for a wheelchair to be loaded and clamped into place alongside the coach.
We are aiming to develop the group so that we can increase our participant base, offer additional equine activities and teach some of our participants to drive independently. For this purpose we need more volunteers. Carriage Driving experience is not necessary as training will be given. Confidence with handling horses is preferred.
If you can spare a few hours on Wednesday mornings, even if it is not every week, then please get in touch. Over the winter months volunteers continue to meet to exercise the three ponies and for training purposes.
