Our usual round-up of local news includes a consultation event in early January regarding the former Institute for Animal Health in Compton, volunteer drivers, a family tracker, a crib, a quiz, stories and a raffle. See also below for community notices and news from your local council.

• Consultation event in Compton

Regular readers will know that the former Institute for Animal health (aka Pirbight) site in Compton has been decontaminated and a developer has now been found: David Wilson Homes. The next stage is putting in the reserved matters (full) planning application for the 160 homes, the outline permission having been granted in early 2023.

Before that happens, David Wilson Homes and Homes England will be hosting a public engagement meeting. This is described in a joint statement as follows:

“David Wilson Homes Southern (DWHS) and Homes England are inviting residents and local stakeholders to an engagement event on Wednesday 14 January 2026 from 2 to 4pm and 5.30 to. 8.30pm at the Wilkins Centre, Burrell Rd, Compton, Newbury RG20 6NP.

“This will consider the detailed proposals for the former Institute for Animal Health Site, High Street, Compton. Hybrid Planning Permission was granted in March 2023 for the redevelopment of the site and included demolition of existing buildings, change of use of the northern part of the site to a wildlife habitat area and outline planning permission for up to 160 dwellings and 1.75 hectares of employment land.

“DWHS and Homes England are progressing the detailed scheme for the residential part of the development and are seeking comments from the community in relation to the proposals. The team are also keen to understand any concerns the local community may have. The technical team associated working on the project will be available to answer any questions residents may have and will be happy to talk attendees through the proposals as needed.

“This is an opportunity for the community to learn about the proposals prior to the submission of the reserved matters planning application to West Berkshire Council. We look forward to welcoming you to the event.”

• Other news

• While this is a festive time of year, it can also be a financial headache for many, but West Berkshire Council says that around 11,000 residents could be missing out on much needed financial support. The Low Income Family Tracker (LIFT) uses anonymised data from the Department for Work and Pensions and the Council to identify households who could be missing out on support such as Pension Credit, Winter Fuel Allowance, Attendance Allowance and Free School Meals.  If you are eligible, you may be contacted by letter or text, with details on how to apply online or get free local support through the Let’s Talk programme, which visits libraries, food banks and community hubs across West Berkshire. • West Berks Council also offer top tips to help reduce food waste, Christmas recycling, how to better plan for winter collections, and revised Christmas and New Year collection click here for full details.

• A quick reminder that children can write a letter to Santa by Saturday 20 December and post them in the special post box in the Compton Village shop. They will be able to collect their replies from the shop from Sunday 21 December.

• Don’t forget that on Christmas Eve at 3pm there will be a crib service in Compton Village Hall, where everyone is invited to come dressed as a nativity character – whatever age. Start the festive season appropriately.

• The Compton Family Christmas quiz trail is now live. Simply grab a map from the village shop, answer some Christmas themed questions and return your answers by Saturday 20 December. You could win a sumptuous hamper and whats more, there is no entry fee.

• There’s a real problem building up about the lack of social housing in many parts of the country, particularly in rural areas. The good news is that there are things that villages can do to help themselves – and organisations which can assist them. In this separate article, we take a look at this issue and link to some sources of expert advice. If you feel that your parish has fewer social-rent homes than it needs and no immediate prospect of this being remedied, see if any of the organisations mentioned can help.

• The Downland Volunteer Group is looking for volunteer drivers to provide transport for local residents needing to get to essential medical appointments. Even if you can only offer one trip a month, your help would be hugely appreciated. Please call 01635 578394 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 11.30am) for more information.

• The Compton Christmas Trail, is a fun and interactive way to celebrate the season while exploring the village. Just pick up your map from the village shop, then at each stop you’ll find a Christmas-themed question for the family to solve. Complete the trail by answering all the questions and return your sheet to the shop by Saturday 20 December. Every completed entry will be entered into a draw to win a Christmas hamper.

• Penny Post’s second volume of short stories and parodies by Brian Quinn, Gravity and Rust, is now available from any bookshop, including the Hungerford Bookshop, the White Horse Bookshop in Marlborough and the Wantage Bookshop. • The Focus on Compton exhibition is well worth a visit at West Berkshire Museum. It’s a fascinating look at the village’s history and archaeology and runs until 8 February 2026. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm and entry is free.
