Hungerford is famous for its independent shops and businesses which make the High Street worth a visit. There is also a Heritage Trail you can enjoy while you are browsing the shops.

Our autumn author event season is going so well. Next up we’re looking forward to Mark Forsyth on Rhyme & Reason: A Short History of Poems & People (for people who don’t usually read poetry) on Wednesday 5 November.

And then on Saturday 8 November we invite you to the book launch of Afterparty the new thriller by Ruth Kelly (who used to live locally) at The Naked Grape from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.  Entry is free – you just need to RSVP.

The best way of ordering books is by emailing us at sales@hungerfordbookshop.co.uk or calling 01488 683480.

But if you would like to order on-line and get the book delivered straight to your house then please order via our page on Bookshop.org (a brilliant alternative to Amazon).

Town & Manor and Hungerford Town Hall

October was a busy time for the Town and Manor herd on Hungerford Common with two sessions of TB testing before departing for their winter home. Thank you to all who helped us keep an eye on the cows this year; contacting us regarding injury and welfare, driving carefully and picking up dog poo.

The landscape of the Common changed as a number of trees damaged by strong winds had to be made safe. When apparently superficial damage turns out to be very bad the entire tree needs to be removed, as in the case of the sycamore near the Inkpen Gate. Where possible wood from such unexpected fellings is generally repurposed on the estate as log and brush piles for wildlife.

The Kennet Valley Wetland Reserve fundraising appeal was launched on Monday 13 October in the Town Hall. The project’s Patron, Lord Benyon and its wildlife writer ambassador, Nicola Chester, were both in attendance along with representatives from ARK, Hungerford Town Council, West Berkshire Council and our wonderful local press. The launch was followed by the first planning meeting of the project team. If your business or organisation would like a presentation on the Kennet Valley Wetland Reserve, please get in touch.

And a quick reminder that Hungerford residents and charities get a 20% discount on hire rates of the Town Hall complex (except for weddings).

Hungerford Arcade

With over 100 antiques dealers under one roof, we have something to entice every visitor, from pocket-money collectors to lottery-winning big spenders. We are delighted to welcome Sue Winfield to Unit 53. Sue has a fascinating mix of pieces, particularly one of the amazing ceramic poppies from the Tower of London commemorating 100 years since the end of WW1, which is particularly apposite with Rembrance Sunday next weekend.

We are proud to have the title of the UK’s Best Antiques centre, as voted for by readers of BBC Homes and Antiques magazine. We’ve also been featured on BBC’s Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Trip and many other radio and TV shows.

We are open seven days a week:
Mon to Fri  9.15am to 5:30pm

Howards Pet Care

Suzi and the team have everything you need for your two and four legged friends from premium dog food, chews, feeding bowls, beds, leads, bird seed to hedgehog houses and bags of dishwater salt.

Our Nutriment and Nature’s Menu ranges are very popular – check out our freezer section for the raw meat options for your four-legged friends.

We also sell wild bird seeds, floating duck and swan pellets . Avoid giving bread if you can, it is not close to their natural diet and cause create wing deformities due to malnutrition. The surplus bread not eaten by the birds causes pollution in the water, especially if it is mouldy, and also attracts rodents.

Also, as ever, a full range of pet food, accessories, treats and toys.

White Feather Gift Shop

Donna is very sad that her little shop in the courtyard is closing. She’s tried everything to keep it going during the past year and would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported her business.

It’s not the end of White Feather Gifts though, it’s a rethink.

Donna asks that we keep following her on social media, and stay on the lookout for updates of what is coming next.
