Compton & Downland Weekly News header

Thursday 16 January 2025

Our usual round-up of local news includes roadworks, a focus, a winter challenge, a pop-up, a youth survey, left-overs, jabs and waiting for the validation of the application for the Baxter Healthcare site in Compton. See also below for community notices and news from your local council.

Upcoming Compton area events include Pop-up Library at Compton Village Hall & Newcomers Party in Hamstead Norreys. See below for details, plus regular events and group activities.

• Still waiting at Baxter

As mentioned last week, Archel Homes is bringing forward proposals to re-develop the Baxter Healthcare offices in Compton for approximately 40 new homes including affordable homes. A consultation was run to seek residents’ views: this has now closed but the website that provided supporting information about the project has not and can be seen by clicking here.

The application has been lodged with West Berkshire Council but still hasn’t been validated: when it is, the details will be available on WBC’s planning portal and residents will be able to make comments on the plans. Once this has happened we’ll publicise the link in this section. I understand that these are substantially unchanged from those described on the website.

The mention of affordable homes will be welcome to many locals and it’s to be hoped that this aspect will survive through into the final scheme (this isn’t always the case). As this is a brownfield site, these should comprise 30% of the total dwellings, ie twelve. That is exactly what the “key benefits” section of the website states.

Some councils publish minutes more promptly than do others. If the link is scored through this may be because draft minutes have been replaced by approved ones and the drafts file deleted.
