Restaurant Review: Bite Express, Newbury

A Turkish delight in the heart of Newbury

Sometimes, the most unexpected culinary gems are hiding just around the corner.

Such is the case with Bite Express, a charming Turkish eatery that definitely worth your attention next time you fancy some Middle Eastern flavours.

As I step into Bite Express, located a mere five-minute stroll from Newbury station, I’m immediately struck by the warm, rustic ambiance.

The wood-panelled walls and natural jute ceiling – all lovingly crafted by the chef-owner himself – create an inviting atmosphere that feels worlds away from the bustling town outside.

The husband-and-wife team behind Bite Express have poured their hearts into this venture, and it shows. What began as a takeaway (and still is) has also blossomed into a full-fledged restaurant, serving up authentic Turkish cuisine with a contemporary twist. The menu, while concise, is a testament to their commitment to quality over quantity.

We begin our culinary journey with the chef’s selection of mixed meze – a vibrant array of flavours that sets the tone for the meal ahead. The aubergine dip is silky smooth, while the ‘dry’ tzatziki (made without water, unlike its Greek counterpart) is rich and indulgent. The sigara boregi – crispy filo pastry rolls stuffed with cheese – are a standout, leaving us eager for more.

For mains, we opt for the chicken and lamb shish. The meat is perfectly cooked, tender and infused with aromatic spices, served atop warm pita bread. The street food-inspired wraps are equally impressive, packed with flavour and satisfyingly hearty.

Despite feeling comfortably full, we can’t resist sampling the pistachio baklava for dessert. It’s a fitting end to our meal – sweet, nutty, and utterly moreish. To complete the experience, my dining companion savours a Turkish beer, served in its original bottle – a small touch that speaks volumes about the owners’ pride in their heritage.

What sets Bite Express apart is not just the quality of its food, but the passion behind it. The chef’s background in fine dining is evident in every dish, elevating simple ingredients into something truly special. Yet, there’s nothing pretentious about the place – it’s comfortable, welcoming, and refreshingly authentic.

The Penny Post Verdict

Whether you’re catching a quick bite before hopping on the train or settling in for a leisurely dinner, Bite Express delivers on all fronts. It’s a hidden gem that deserves to shine, offering a true taste of Turkey that you don’t often get in these parts.

So, next time you find yourself in Newbury, venture beyond the high street and discover the delights of Bite Express. Your palate will thank you!
