Children and Young People in Greenham Set to Enjoy Extended Range of Social and Sporting Opportunities Offered by Local Youth Charity

Children and young people in Greenham are set to enjoy an extended range of activities offered by local youth charity, the Community Youth Project (CYP) based at Greenham Community Centre.

CYP already works closely alongside the local community and young people to provide term-time and holiday activities and offer a safe meeting space for children and young people aged 7 to 17. Its current work in the Nightingales Estate has helped to reduce anti-social behaviour and petty crime, supporting the Home Office’s Safer Streets initiative in the Thames Valley.

CYP’s core focus, which is generously supported and funded by The Greenham Trust, is to ensure young people from the local area are equipped to make informed decisions, stay healthy and safe, and build lasting relationships with their peers.

The charity’s existing offer includes school holiday visits to ice skating, bowling, theme parks, zoos, laser quest and sporting events which give young people from the area chances to enjoy new experiences that they would otherwise be unable to access. Their term time youth clubs, split into age groups, are presently delivered three days a week, with two of the sessions being held solely for West Berkshire Young Carers.

From September, two further after-school youth clubs, alongside a new Friday morning Breakfast Club and additional weekly sports sessions will be added to the weekly menu of activities on offer, which has already proven to promote social cohesion within the community of young people and helped to improve mental and physical well-being.

Matthew Wonnacott, Project Manager at CYP described this as “a very exciting time for everyone at Community Youth Project. The expansion of our work to offer activities five days a week during term time will make a huge difference to the community, especially the children and young people.”

Laura Mills, West Berkshire Young Carers Project Worker added that “with our partnership with Community Youth Project, we can deliver weekly youth groups and holiday activities for West Berks Young Carers, giving them much needed respite from their caring role. Without this partnership, the service toward young carers would not be what it is, and support from CYP is essential to the delivery of the youth groups and holiday provision.”

“As Trustees we are proud of the Charity’s work alongside the local community,” Derek Peaple, Chair of Trustees at CYP said. “Together with the generous support of our partners at The Greenham Trust, will now offer an even wider range of opportunities for children and young people to enjoy and engage with throughout the year.”

“We are very pleased to support the Community Youth Project in its vital work,” Rob Daniels, Head of Grants at The Greenham Trust commented.CYP’s efforts to engage and inspire young people in Greenham through expanded social and sporting opportunities are hugely important. By providing these additional sessions, and working with local partners, they are not only helping to build brighter futures for these young people but also fostering a stronger, more connected community. We look forward to seeing the continued positive impact over the coming months and years.”
