Refugee Case Worker required in Newbury

West Berkshire Action for Refugees (WBAR) currently as a vacancy for a Refugee Case Worker, based in Newbury. WBAR has been supporting refugees and asylum seekers in West Berkshire for over seven years. We have a large, dedicated team of volunteers. Join our experienced team to provide support and create holistic services for our clients.

  • Salary £25,000 to £27,000 (22.5 hours per week pro rata), reporting to West Berkshire Action for Refugees Team Leader.
  • 12-month contract.
  • Car driver with own car is essential; mileage expenses will be paid.

This is an exciting new post. You will be helping vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers to settle in West Berkshire, find accommodation and employment and navigate a new life.

As a Case Worker, you will work with a number of families and individuals who have either arrived in the UK under specific resettlement schemes, have recently been granted their refugee status or are awaiting the outcome of their asylum application. You will support people in the community and their homes, who may be in supported, temporary or private sector accommodation.

We strongly encourage those with lived experience to apply; this might be of forced migration or the UK immigration system. We also consider relevant experience to include supporting other community members to overcome challenges/access services (not just experience gained in paid work)

Your areas of expertise and knowledge

  • An understanding of the issues which can affect asylum seekers and newly recognised refugees attempting to rebuild their lives in a new country.
  • A commitment to gaining the knowledge and skills required to work effectively with people experiencing a range of often complicated issues.
  • The ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • The ability to ensure services are delivered in an accessible, impartial and confidential manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, sufficient to communicate accurately and clearly with a range of audiences: in writing and over the phone as well as in person.
  • Excellent listening skills and the ability to empathise as well as establish boundaries.
  • Good IT skills including use of email and the internet and an understanding of the importance of data protection and IT security.
  • An understanding of and commitment to Equal Opportunities in direct service provision.
  • (Desirable) a good knowledge of the asylum system and immigration system relating to refugees.

Main duties

  • Supporting asylum seekers in temporary accommodation.
  • Supporting asylum seekers and refugees who are moving into the community.
  • Working with the Team Leader in co-ordinating and inspiring our team of amazing volunteers.
  • Working with the WBAR team who provide background support.
  • Working with other agencies to provide support in diverse areas.
