Climbing Wall – New Sports Facility for Students and the Community.

John O’ Gaunt School is raising funds for a new, state of the art climbing wall that will benefit the whole community. Due to its unique position in the rural town of Hungerford, the school has the privilege of serving its locality as well as students. ‘JOG’s daily, working, whole-school ethos of ambition, care and courage now includes exciting new plans for a high-quality climbing wall, which the Parent Staff Association (PSA) are currently fundraising for.

JOG School already shares several of its facilities with the town – including the independently run Leisure Centre, Hungerford Youth Club, the 3G Football pitch, and other local groups such as The Community of Hungerford Theatre Company, art clubs and sporting groups.

The education sector’s laser-focussed trend to fund education means a school’s position and investment in the wider community and shared community facilities often fall by the wayside. For a school in JOG’s unique position within the town of Hungerford and the satellite villages and hamlets it serves (from Kintbury, Inkpen, Lambourn, Great Shefford, East Garston, Aldbourne and more) this is important, and something they are not willing to relinquish!

The new Climbing Wall would benefit the rural area, where such opportunities and facilities  are often limited and far apart. The wall will encourage engagement, progression and skill development, as well as mental and physical health benefits. The design of the wall allows unlimited scope for creative route setting and re-positioning with 9 climbing lines.

Grants already gratefully received from Hungerford Town Council, Hungerford Town and Manor, the Englefield Charitable Trust and Greenham Trust have boosted those raised by JOG’s small but mighty PSA. Match-funded through The Good Exchange, nearly £12,000 of the £28,261 needed has been raised so far but the remaining £16,000 needs to be found before the end of June, for the project to go ahead.
