Girls releasing their inner warrior at Marlborough Rugby Club

Marlborough Rugby Club first established their designated girls’ rugby team back in 2021, starting with just six girls. Now there are 25 girls aged between 10 and 16 gathering every Monday night for their rugby fix. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is encouraging girls and women to play rugby by providing resources to clubs to establish their own teams. While girls in Year 6 and below can play in mixed teams, they must transition to a girls’ only team the following school year if they wish to continue playing rugby.

The girls’ team is led by three coaches: Nick West-Oram, Mark Vosper and Tom Bull who aim to provide an environment where the girls have fun and make new friends. The girls also learn to develop life skills such as resilience, teamwork, leadership, communication and determination. Those who wish to play more competitive rugby are encouraged and supported and everyone enjoys the hot chocolate and chatter after training.

A younger dedicated girls’ team is also planned. When the coaching and numbers are sufficient, this group will begin training earlier on Monday evenings.

Another exciting development is the decision of the Bath Rugby U18s women’s team to make Marlborough Rugby Club their hub, which will further enhance the visibility and success of the girls’ rugby team.

How to get involved

New members are always welcome to join in any Monday evening at 6.30pm for a free trial session (no previous experience required) – see Marlborough Girls Rugby facebook page.

The girls’ team is really gaining traction and requires additional support to reach its goals so sponsorship is gratefully requested as the girls need financial assistance in securing their own playing kit, additional lighting to train under and other equipment.

Additionally, volunteers with coaching, team management, marketing skills or who can organise inspirational events for the girls to attend are encouraged to contact the club at girls@mrfc.co.uk to contribute to the team’s success.

Whether it is financial or volunteering support, any help would be invaluable to the girls’ team at Marlborough Rugby Club.
