Return of the Abingdon Air Show

In September 2022 the Abingdon Air & Country Show was understandably cancelled due to the death of the Queen.

Saturday 20 May 2023 heralded the return of this popular event at Dalton Barracks with warm sunny weather and really good conditions for fly-bys and aerobatics.

At the entrance there was an opportunity to see inside a Hercules plane (above) and to sit inside the cockpit and admire the view.

There were plenty of stalls to cater for all tastes from military surplus stalls to a craft tent for the ladies! In the arena there were a variety of displays from youngsters demonstrating their motorbike skills to Siberian huskeys and falconry.

The main air display started at about 1.30pm. Unfortunately technical difficulties meant the Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight was unable to fly but there was still plenty of entertainment with a Hurricane in flight, plus the Titans display team and the Gazelle Squadron were fun to watch.

A music tent and catering vans completed the entertainment although a tip for future air shows is to take your own food and drink as there were long queues all day for the burger vans.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

The mission of the RAF BBMF is to maintain the priceless artefacts of our national heritage in airworthy condition in order to commemorate those who have fallen in the service of this country – a ‘museum without walls’.

The Flight operates six Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a C47 Dakota, and two Chipmunk aircraft (primarily for training). The aircraft are flown by regular RAF Aircrew.

These aircraft can be regularly seen in the skies over the UK from May to September each year. They are flown to celebrate and commemorate public and military events from State occasions such as Trooping the Colour to major airshows and flypasts for public events.
