Taste of Ramadan at West Berkshire Muslim Centre

WBMC muslim dignitaries Ramadan

Here at the West Berkshire Muslim Centre we focus on bringing communities together, by working with schools, colleges, police and other ‘blue light’ emergency services, the Scouts Association plus representatives from the Newbury and Thatcham Town Councils etc. This year, we were fortunate to have the Mayor and Mayoress together with the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Newbury attend.

Amongst other things, we arrange an annual ‘Taste of Ramadan’ event where we invite local dignitaries, together with others who share different faiths or no faith to break a day of fasting with us at an Iftar meal as friends. This is undertaken during the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is of particular significance to Muslims, as it is one of the five core principles of being a Muslim. These are the Shahadah (declaration of faith), belief in one God, Prayer, Fasting and the Hajj. Fasting is one of these ‘five pillars’ meaning that fasting during the month of Ramadan is mandatory for all able Muslims.

During this year’s event on Saturday 8 April, we shared a series of short presentations highlighting activities undertaken by the Centre, and how these have positively impacted our local communities. By showing what the local Muslim community are achieving for all in our locality we hope to break misconceptions and build ever-stronger ties with those around us. We were delighted that over 350 people attended the ‘Taste of Ramadan’ which was a great opportunity for Muslims and non-Muslims alike to share this important occasion.

Of course, this was only made possible by the volunteers who contributed their tireless efforts to ensure the event was a success and those who offered their catering services at a heavily discounted rate, or at no cost at all. We are also grateful for those individuals & businesses who contributed financially to the event.

So, in short: we are here to assist individuals and other organisations and to contribute within the local area that we call ‘home’.
