1st Hungerford Scouts Project Trench Candle

Hungerford Scouts making candles for Ukraine

When we heard about the trench candle appeal for Ukraine from Penny Post we were very pleased to help.

The scout leaders researched how they were made and we were pleased for Mandy Brady’s help and guidance on the night.

Thanks to donations of tins, wax and unwanted candles from the community, we managed to make a good number by cutting up cardboard into strips, then twisted and fitted inside tin cans, a further few pieces of cardboard were used as wicks. We then melted the wax and poured it into the tins.

Mandy explained to the Scouts how important these trench candles, or mini stoves as they are also called, are because they can be used by soldiers and civilians to warm up, dry out their dugouts and clothes and even to cook food. The trench candles will be shipped to Ukraine with letters of support from the Scouts.

Thank you to the community for also donating candles and tins for this project and their continuing support.
