Local appeal for aid for Turkey earthquake victims

The desctruction caused in Turkey and Syria on 6 February by two massive earthquakes within 24 hours has affected an area that equates to the size of Germany. There have been many earthquakes in this area before but the unprecedented devastation this time has been cause by the second quake which brought down many buildings that had been cracked by the first one.

The impact on the whole Turkish and Syrian community is devastating. Everyone has lost a friend or family member and in some tragic cases, people have lost their whole family.

The local response to the appeal for aid has been tremendous. Adem Cetin from Hungerford Kebab House who grew up in Turkey, is coordinating aid from our area. He told us on Thursday 9 February that 190 tonnes of aid have been delivered to Turkish Airlines already. They have been able to take 40 tonnes in cargo and passenger planes with the rest stored at the airport. There is still three warehouses of aid waiting to be transported.

So if you would like to make a financial donation instead, Adem will not receive it personally but he recommends sending it to the Wiltshire Turkish Centre in Swindon who he knows well and are working tirelessly to get aid to the people who need it.

Their bank details are:

Wiltshire Turkish Community Centre
Lloyds Bank
