Newbury Friends of the Earth hosted a Winter Social for local environmentalists on Saturday 21 January 2023.
Nearly 40 people gathered at Newbury Canoe Club centre on the canal to celebrate the achievements over the last few years (including the creation and maintenance of five Lockdown Woods across West Berkshire) and to enjoy each other’s company in the warm and dry for a change!
Members of Hungerford Environmental Action Team, Growing Newbury Green, Greener Greenham Group, West Berkshire Green Exchange and XR joined FoE and Lockdown Woods folk for excellent relaxed conversation.
Tessa Hall of ‘Sing the World’ taught everyone a lovely song with lyrics inspired by Greta Thunberg, and Susan Millington, coordinator of Newbury FoE made a toast to ‘Our beautiful world, and to friendship’. Much gentle networking was done over delicious home-made food and the conversation never waned!
2023 Events
The first session of 2023 will be a ‘Grand Tour’ of the three Newbury Lockdown Woods on Sunday 5 February. Meet in Goldwell Park at 10am, then travel by bike or car (lifts available) to Barn Crescent and Stroud Green, just to enjoy the baby woodlands and see what needs doing in future work parties. All welcome.
