Newbury Samaritans are looking for new volunteers to join their team at West Street in the heart of the town.
Samaritans aim to provide emotional support to those in emotional distress, struggling to cope or at risk of suicide. In Newbury, this support is provided through answering telephone calls and emails from those in need.
Anyone who wants to help others, and is tolerant and open-minded, is welcome to apply. You don’t need to have been through a particular life experience or to be from a certain walk of life.
For more information please listen here (from 9 mins 15 secs) to Penny’s interview with Director of Newbury Samaritans Andrew Melsom.
What you get out of being a volunteer with Samaritans?
You’ll learn valuable new skills, make new friendships and be part of an amazing group of people. You’ll receive full training to prepare you for the conversations you’ll have, and when you start out, you’ll have a mentor to help you build the confidence to engage with callers. Training is ongoing, plus you will have the support from your co-volunteers and benefit from their wealth of experience.
