Newbury Comes Out to March with Pride!

newbury pride march 2022

Last weekend saw a fantastic turn-out for Newbury Pride 2022, the very first LGBTQIA+ march of its kind in West Berkshire.

The march took place on Saturday 2 July, with hundreds of locals lining the streets of Newbury – covered in rainbow colours and flags, in support the LGBTQIA+ community. The parade started at around 1:30pm from Victoria Park, with the colourful crowd marching through Parkside Shopping area and Northbrook Street, before finishing in the Marketplace, where a booth with Kennet Radio was set up for a lively disco party!

Newbury Pride has been 3 years in the making, with the first march originally planned for 2020, however was stalled due to the pandemic. We’re glad to see the event finally come together with such spectacular success.

The local Newbury Pride group, when they aren’t organising pride marches, hold regular socials for LGBTQIA+ folks, to make new friends, share experiences and build support networks. Check out their website, or various social media platforms to check out the fun shenanigans they get up to, as well as get updates on future events.

Although this year’s pride parade has now been and gone, there is still time to see the new ‘Hope and Pride’ exhibition at the West Berkshire Museum. The exhibit explores the social and political history of how Pride started in the UK, as well as the history and relevance of Pride across the country. There are also contributions from local communities regarding their experiences growing up and living in and around Newbury as an LGBTQIA+ person. ‘Hope and Pride will be be running the entire year, until 2 July 2023.
