Thatcham Town Council and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon Lighting

As the country celebrates Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Thatcham Town Council will be providing and supporting a Beacon Lighting ceremony and festivities on the evening of Thursday 2 June at Dunstan Green Park.

We are pleased to now announce that after the 9.45pm Beacon Lighting there will be a six-minute fireworks display choreographed to music presented by UK Fireworks. We can also announce that Thatcham-based Dance with Sonia Brown at 9.20pm will be parading Thatcham Primary School Choirs into the performance area. The routines they present will be the same ones that their over-50s dancers will be showcasing as they represent Thatcham on 5 June in the official HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant in London. As they dance past the Queen, they’ll be dressed as fish: this connects with Thatcham’s association with the river, a theme that also appears on the Town Council’s logo.

Thatcham will be combining simultaneously with over 1,500 beacon lighting events across the UK and Commonwealth. Cold Ash Brass Band will perform at 9.00pm. At 9.40pm a special bugler call written for the occasion called Majesty will officially announce the lighting of the beacon at 9.45pm and this will be followed by a choir made up from all five of Thatcham’s Primary Schools who will sing an official song commissioned for the occasion. There will be other activities at Dunstan Green starting from 8.30pm including stilt walkers, and dancers. Families will be able to make a commemorative item and refreshments will also be available.

It will not be possible to park at Dunstan Green on the day of the event and we ask the public to make alternative arrangements. Nearest parking is at Bradley-Moore Square car park or the Kingsland Centre car park in the Town Centre.

At 12.30pm on 2 June, in Thatcham Town Centre, a town crier will declare a special written proclamation announcing the start of the Jubilee celebrations in Thatcham.

Bruno Peek, LVO OBE OPR, Pageant Master of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons, said: “Building on a long tradition of lighting beacons to mark significant royal celebrations, over 1,500 Platinum Jubilee Beacons will be lit across the UK and Commonwealth on the first evening of the four-day Jubilee Weekend (on Thursday 2 June 2022). The Beacons will enable local communities to join together and pay tribute to Her Majesty as part of the official programme of events.

“For the first time town criers, pipers, buglers and choirs from the UK and the Commonwealth will come together to join in the celebrations in their own individual and special way. It is wonderful to see the range of support for beacon lighting which will highlight both the diversity and the unity of the nation. The Queen has lit up our lives for seventy years through her dedicated service and commitment. We would like to light up the nation and the Commonwealth in her honour.’’
