News from Great Shefford PTFA

December Update

If you listen hard, you can just about hear Christmas carols on the breeze…

But before we get carried away with festivities, a brief review of last month. The children put their brains in gear for their half term sponsored  “Word in a Word Challenge”. We challenged them to make as many words as possible from the letters in “Great Shefford”. Our intrepid word scramblers raised nearly £300! The internet indicates that there are well over 1300 possible words. How many can you find?  No cheating!

We are still aglow with the success of our Winter Fete on Saturday 19 November. It was a real pleasure to see so many people from the school (both staff, current and past pupils) and village come along to enjoy the fun, whether it was suspense at tombola, raffle or “Lob a Choc”, buying beautiful crafts or the guaranteed wins at “Coin Drop” and a personal favourite game, the cafe! Final takings to be confirmed but not far short of £1,000 raised!! This is a fantastic sum, particularly with the challenges faced across our communities with rising costs in all areas of life.

Looking ahead to Christmas, we have put up lights (very kindly loaned to us by a local business) in the trees at the Shefford site entrance. Do walk to the end of Blakeney Fields to admire our hard work!

We have assisted with the costs of transport for the many and varied class trips this term, and we will be providing refreshments at the forthcoming nativity and carol performances.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters and wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Chaddleworth and Shefford Schools Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA) comprises parents, staff and community members. We are a small group, but always welcome new members. You do not need to be connected to the school – you may just wish to be involved in a community group.

Our aims are simple, working closely with the school to enhance the education of the pupils and engaging in activities both in the school and in the community to raise funds.

Easter News

With Bingo, a pop up café and a busy Easter bunny we have had a productive few weeks!

Huge thanks to our community for supporting the bingo and pop up café, we have raised an amazing £1359.85 with both events. It was wonderful to see our friends in the community, and so nice to enjoy social time with restrictions have lifted.

We plan to do more pop up cafes, and I’m sure bingo will be back as well as events, trips, discos and BBQs.

Just before Easter, the Easter Bunny spent the afternoon in school, and with the help of some of the PTFA team, they organised an Easter Peg Hunt. Rather than hide chocolate, we hide pegs with each child’s name on, and they work together to find everyone’s name. In exchange for their peg, they receive an egg. It was a fun afternoon, and lovely to see the children enjoy the garden and sunshine.

Our fund raising efforts have been focused on invigorating a garden space in the front area of the school.

Our next Bags2School collection will be on Wednesday 18 May. We are looking for donations of men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, paired shoes, handbags, belts and accesories (no uniforms, workwear, pillows, duvets or pieces of fabric please). The more bags of donations we collect, the more money we get paid. Please bring your bags to the school by 9am on Wednesday 18 May or contact me to arrange local collection.

Many thanks,

Caroline Farrant
