Career opportunities in Adult Social Care at West Berkshire Council

West Berkshire is recruiting for positions in adult social care

West Berkshire Council has a large Adult Social Care team with over 400 staff working in a range of settings including care homes, day centres and people’s own homes, as well as in our offices.

We work with adults who need extra support. This could be after an illness or injury, or where people have disabilities including learning disabilities or long-term conditions like dementia or mental illness. The roles we have include carers, social workers, occupational therapists, dementia specialists and managers, as well as finance and admin staff.

Starting a role in adult social care can be a route to many opportunities. Many of our staff join in entry level roles and go on to become experts in specialist areas from dementia and learning difficulties to occupational therapy and social work.

All colleagues benefit from excellent training and development opportunities to progress within the council, including apprenticeships. Many move across from one team to another to discover what they really enjoy, so they can grow their careers to suit their own passions and interests.

“I started out in an administrative role within the team and was thinking of training in Social Work, but after spending some time in a team which included Occupational Therapists, and seeing the impact of the work on the lives of people they were helping, I knew that was the right career for me. I was sponsored to attend university where I achieved a first-class honours degree in occupational therapy and now I love the challenges and successes I see in my work every day.” Emma Smyth, Occupational Therapist, West Berkshire.

Recruiting now

We are actively recruiting, offering a variety of flexible positions and regularly encourage applications for roles including:

  • Reablement practitioners: working with those who need short term support to return to independence, after an illness or injury. These roles suit those who like taking on new challenges and enjoy meeting new people and seeing them making progress.
  • Dementia/care practitioners: these roles suit people who enjoy building relationships over a long time with people they are supporting and working together as part of a team. If you have excellent interpersonal skills this can be a great way to get into adult social care.
  • Bank staff: to support our friendly teams, working shifts providing caring and nursing in our care homes in Newbury and Kintbury.
  • Other positions: we frequently need to recruit housekeeping, admin, social work and occupational therapy roles and our website is regularly updated with the latest jobs available.
