Why choose books?
Well, you’re asking the right person – where do I start?
Aside from all their other advantages, books make wonderful presents. They don’t need batteries or chargers, they’re easy to wrap, they last longer than a box of chocolates or a bottle of fizz (and have no calories) and they provide hours of entertainment. As the author Garrison Keillor said, ” a book is a gift you can open again and again”. At Hungerford Bookshop, our shelves and tables are heavy with new releases, bestsellers, bookseller favourites and quirky finds. We have everything from handsome hardbacks to enchanting picture books for children as well as a wide range of perfect stocking fillers.
Beautifully wrapped books delivered to their door
This year we have relaunched our book subscription package, a very special gift for the book lover in your life.
Unlike many bookshops our subscription service is bespoke which means the recipient will open a book based on the notes we have made during a friendly book consultation over a cup of coffee, so we are pretty sure they will enjoy it. When you buy a package (see the options below) we will give you a voucher along with a couple of books so the subscriber has something to open on Christmas Day. After our book chat, we’ll carefully wrap up their chosen book, pop in a bookmark or two and post it out to them each month. The gift that keeps on giving, in other words.
- Monthly paperback for six months £85 (hardback option £130).
- Monthly paperback for 12 months £160 (hardback option £240).
Build a book hamper
New this year is our ‘build a book hamper’.
Give us an idea of the kind of thing the reader enjoys and we’ll choose four or five books and gifts, arranged in our trademark blue hamper. We’ll send you pictures and prices to make sure you are happy with our selection (alternatively, you can choose your own in the bookshop). We will charge you the cost of the books plus £5. Popular themes have included gardening, drinking, nature writing and children’s books. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with your request.
Browse by appointment
We’re re-instating our popular ‘browse by appointment’ sessions in the bookshop.
If you are at work all day, or if you fancy book shopping in a less busy environment, then you can book an after-hours slot so you can pick our brains about what you need without any background noise. Visit Eventbrite for times. You can even pre-order a glass of complimentary fizz at the same time. All in all, a highly civilised way to get your Christmas shopping done.
