Downland Volunteer Group Handybus & Car Service re-launches Wantage service

Founded in 1986, the Downland Volunteer Group’s aim is to provide transport for people in the villages north of Newbury who are elderly, sick or disabled or otherwise in need. The service is operated in two ways – the car section where volunteers use their own cars and the Handybus division. The bus is a community asset and can be hired by any social group or club subject to the availability of a volunteer driver.

We drive patients requiring transport to their medical appointments at the surgeries and hospitals in the area. Before lockdown around 900 trips were made each year.

Anyone requiring transport to the surgeries or hospitals in Newbury, Reading or Oxford should contact our office on 01635 578394 in the Compton surgery which is open Monday to Friday between 9.30am – 11.30am to take appointments for the following week onwards.

HandyBus shopping trips to Wantage

In March we are pleased to be re-launching the HandyBus shopping trip to Wantage on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, picking up in Leckhampstead and Chaddleworth. The first pickup is normally around 10am and the last passenger should be home by 1pm.  Timings to be agreed with the driver and will vary with the number of passengers and stops.

The fare is normally £4 for the round trip, but the trips on Tuesday 14 and 28 March will be free.

Passengers are collected from their home and when they return, they can get assistance carrying their shopping to their door if required.

If you or someone you know wants to use the service, please ring 07785 221040 or email and book a seat.  We need to know in good time so we can arrange to pick you up!

Can you help?

We also need more volunteer drivers and anyone willing to work in our Compton office a few hours a week to arrange these trips. Are you able to support the Downland community by giving a few hours of your time? If so, please email Jean on for more details.

Volunteer Car Drivers

Are you a car driver with a couple of hours a week (or even a month) to spare? We need new volunteers to join our friendly team so please do get in touch on 01635 578394 or

Drivers of the 13- seater Mercedes Sprinter handybus.

This bus enables residents in the Downland villages with limited access to transport to go shopping, or enjoy trips to nearby locations, on pre-planned days. Existing routes are very popular as a social outing, with many regular passengers. You need a clean driving licence with D1 category. Please get in touch on 01635 578394 or
