Downland Volunteer Group Handybus Service to restart June 2021

Founded in 1986, the Downland Volunteer Group’s aim is to provide transport for people in the villages north of Newbury who are elderly, sick or disabled or otherwise in need. The service is operated in two ways – the car section where volunteers use their own cars and the Handybus division. The bus is a community asset and can be hired by any social group or club subject to the availability of a volunteer driver.

We drive patients requiring transport to their appointments at the surgeries and hospitals in the area. Before lockdown around 900 trips were made each year.

Because of the pandemic we have been unable to operate for over a year. With the easing of lockdown we restarted our car service from 21 June 2021. The Handybus service is expected to restart in August 2021.

Anyone requiring transport to the surgeries or hospitals in Newbury, Reading or Oxford should contact our office on 01635 578394 in the Compton surgery which is open Monday to Friday between 9.30am – 11.30am to take appointments for the following week onwards.

Can you help?

We also need more volunteer drivers and anyone willing to work in our Compton office a few hours a week to arrange these trips. Are you able to support the Downland community by giving a few hours of your time? If so, please email Jean on michaeljeanpocock@gmail.com for more details.
