Local Soroptimist Clubs for Women Inspiring Action Around the World

Swindon Soroptomist

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement of ‘Women Inspiring Action’ with a network of around 72,000 club members in 121 countries. Advocating for human rights and gender equality, at the heart of Soroptimist International’s advocacy is its work across eight UN Centres, where our UN representatives ensure that the voices of women and girls are heard. Our members work on grassroots projects that help women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in communities worldwide.

Our aim is to Educate, Empower and Enable opportunities for women and raise awareness and petitioning for women’s rights including protection against violence and human trafficking. Soroptimist Clubs around the world undertake joint projects and partner with organisations such as Water Aid.

Swindon Soroptimists

Swindon Soroptimists celebrate over 60 years of service to the local and wider community.  Our achievements range from influencing the change in the law on pornography, supplying hearing aids deaf children in Nigeria, to providing over 600 books to Swindon’s Drove Primary School and raising £100K for local and wider charities.

Since 2017 Swindon Soroptimists have visited the Swindon Nelson Trust Women’s Centre to present 25 individual Easter eggs for the women who use the Centre and its services, as well as bags of mini eggs for the hardworking staff.

Keyworkers Rae and Mia from the Centre were delighted to meet Jackie and Lydia in the Centre’s courtyard garden and were so grateful for their support in making lockdown that little bit easier.

We meet generally twice a month, one to discuss our project work and a second optional speaker / meal meeting. Members don’t have to attend every meeting. It costs only £85 p.a. to be a member, split between Club costs and our Federation and Regional organisations, which provide us with support, resources and opportunities for wider meetings and conferences.

We are actively seeking new members so that we can expand the project work we do and are happy to have informal chats over coffee or on Zoom initially for anyone interested.
