Welcome to Eight Bells Community Strength

Community Strength is an important new scheme that will provide community-based support from Community Navigator volunteers to prevent and reduce social isolation throughout West Berkshire. It will encourage people of all ages to look after themselves, live independently and have a good quality of life. It will also support individuals’ mental health and wellbeing. The intention is to provide to help communities to develop their own strength and resilience so that they can thrive.

Through a referral process, it will support adults who are at risk of loneliness and isolation, who have long term medical conditions, who suffer with mental ill health or have a physical or learning disability. If you or anyone you know would like support please email community.strength@eightbellsnewbury.co.uk

Community Navigators are well trained volunteers with a good local knowledge and a clear understanding of what is going on in their local community.   They will be able to signpost and support local people to local services or join community-based activities, taking the time to understand the needs and interests of the person they are helping. Community Navigators will encourage people to recognise their own strengths to help make better choices and grow confidence.

How can you help?

Become a Community Navigator Volunteer in your local area. You can give as much or as little time as you have. We are looking for people with the right attitude and qualities. You must have friendly nature and good listening skills with the ability to connect with a range of people. Please see here the full Community Navigator role description

What does it involve?
You need to get to know and understand the person you are supporting. The Community Navigator scheme will provide personalised information, advice and support to people using the service and signpost or refer them to appropriate activities, services and support which will help to meet their needs. All relevant training will be provided.

Navigators will also provide support to people to give them the confidence to develop skills to find solutions and access information themselves online as well as attend services and support sessions with the clients when necessary.
