Good news from St Katharine’s House Care Home in Wantage

St Katharine’s House Care Home in the centre of Wantage is benefitting from early protective measures against coronavirus taken by Manager Seung Ping Riggs.

“We started preparing for the pandemic at the end of February,” explains Seung Ping. “Coming from Hong Kong, my family has experience of SARS and posted us 5 boxes of good quality PPE including masks, disposable gowns, jumpsuits, shoe covers, goggles. I have also been ordering extra PPE this end for weeks and we have had a very kind donation of masks made by the D&T department at King Alfred’s and gloves, overshoe protectors and goggles from Harwell Research Campus. This will be a long journey so we will need it all.

“We started wearing masks at the beginning of March and the new equipment was difficult for the staff at first but we do daily training to help them get used to the new routines required and they have adapted very well”.

Seung Ping also took the decision to lock down the care home two weeks before the government directive. The residents’ families were not happy with the decision because it meant they couldn’t visit their loved ones but they are very grateful now.

“We also stopped using agency staff because of the risk of infection so our own staff have stepped up to work overtime to cover their hours. We know our staff just travel between their own homes and St Katharine’s so we can control the risk.”

Thanks to Seung Ping’s forward planning, St Katharine’s has not had any coronavirus cases to date and continues to admit new residents.

Their local GP Surgery is also very grateful that the care home nurses are taking over the nursing care for the patients in the care home that the District Nurse normally treats, freeing up her time to provide care in the community.
