A number of local communities, including Chaddleworth, have set up a volunteer network to help people who are vulnerable or self-isolating. This is based on and inspired by the simple and effective #viralkindness scheme started by Becky Wass in Falmouth.
In Chaddleworth, a ‘what’s app’ group of volunteers has been set up. Each volunteer is assigned an area of the parish, prints the cards and adds their own details to the ‘Hello’ one. These are then distributed around the village.
Any requests for help are then posted on the group so that there’s a constantly-updated record of who needs assistance and who is helping to provide it. The scheme there is also being extended to include the collection of prescriptions.
If you live in Chaddleworth and would either like to volunteer or if you would like to receive this service and haven’t been contacted, please call any of the following:
If any community elsewhere wishes to start such a group (and many have already done so) then a local social-media group or, if one doesn’t exist, contacting your local town or parish council would be a good place to start.
Once the group is set up, those in West Berkshire are advised to contact Volunteer Centre West Berkshire – this isn’t so that the new group’s work can be monitored or controlled but so that VCWB is aware of it and so can direct any suitable volunteers which approach VCWB to them. VCWB will, if asked, also be able to provide about any advice and assistance that might be required once the group starts its work.
