New bins help people to Recycle ‘on the go’ in Newbury

new plastic recyling bins for west berks

West Berkshire Council has teamed up with their waste contractor Veolia to install eight new recycling litter bins in Newbury town centre to help people to recycle on the go!

Residents and visitors to Newbury will now be able to recycle their plastic bottles and cans easily which will boost the districts recycling rate.

The new recycling bins will be branded green so that they are easily recognisable for recycling rather than normal litter bins.

Steve Ardagh-Walter, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for the Environment said: “I’m delighted that we are able to offer people the chance to keep recycling when they are on the move. I’m particularly pleased to announce this during National Recycling Week.

“Maintaining a green district is a priority for the council and increasing opportunities for people to recycle while they’re out and about is a step in the right direction.  Residents and visitors to the town centre are keen recycle more and we are committed to making it as easy as possible for them to do that.”

Sara Perry, General Manager, Veolia West Berkshire commented: “It’s important we all remember to recycle on-the-go as well as at home. As a nation we currently only recycle 60% of plastic bottles so this is a great way to help residents and visitors to increase our recycling rates.”

Laurie-Jane Cann, Newbury Business Improvement District’s CEO welcomed the new recycling bins. She said:  “The BID Team are delighted that the Council and Veolia have introduced the new recycling bins to the town centre.

“Our town centre businesses are more conscientious than ever about being as sustainable as possible and are doing a great job with their recycling. By enabling people to recycle when they are out and about, we hope to see a further boost to Newbury’s  recycling commitment.”

To be recycled on the go, plastic bottles and cans must be completely empty before they go into the recycling bins.

The new recycling bins can be found at The Broadway, Park Way, Cheap Street, Northbrook Street, Market Place, Station Road. Wharf Road and (following completion of roadworks) Bear Lane, Newbury.

*The recycling bins are for plastic bottles and cans as drink containers are frequently bought and discarded within the town centre and train station area.  Paper is not discarded in volume at these locations and items such as sandwich packets are not suitable for recycling due to the lining of the packet and food contamination.
