Mikayla Beames – The Inspiration

14-year-old Mikayla Beames from Childrey near Wantage was diagnosed with brain cancer (Ganglioglioma) at the age of 4. Since then, Mikayla has been fighting this brain tumour, undergoing regular chemotherapy along with numerous surgical procedures, scans and interventions. The tumour has severely affected her sight in her right eye and has limited the vision in her left eye so she is now registered blind. However, Mikayla has remarkable spirit and determination to enjoy life to the full and remains a fully active member of Hanney Brownies along with her 3 brothers and 1 sister.

Seven years ago Mikayla told her mother Natasha that she would like to help other children with cancer. From this simple request, Team Mikayla was born raising over £100,000 to be able to grant wishes to over 150 other children fighting cancer on the Kamrans Ward at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford or the Leicester Royal Infirmary. They have also given Christmas Gifts and Easter Eggs to the In-Patients, and general gifts for the Wards such as tablet devices and games consoles.

For the joy she brings to brave children fighting life’s extremes, Mikayla was voted the Inspirational Child WellChild Award Winner 2016 and received her award from Prince Harry. Mikayla also received her “Great and Valuable Service to the Community” award from the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire on November 4 2021.

Team Mikayla has been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, also known as the “MBE of voluntary awards” which is the highest award for the voluntary sector in the UK. Mikayla and her twelve Trustees received the award crystal and certificate from Tim Stevenson OBE, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire in the summer of 2021, whilst two Trustees will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2022 (depending on restrictions at the time), along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

Can you help?

Team Mikayla relies on volunteers to organise fetes, raffles etc, or large sponsored events for example sponsored skydive, London Marathon or a TM team climb of Kilimanjaro.

All events whether large or small addition to the pot of funds to grant wishes of children fighting cancer whether it is toys, family trips to Paulton’s Park or a pampering experience.
