Diana Pattenden is a sculptor of bronze and ceramic limited-edition pieces, animals, portraits, abstract form and commissioned work. She also offers practical classes for people wishing to learn about sculpture and ceramics, hosts parties for children allowing them to play with clay and organises Prosecco and Clay evenings, giving people an opportunity to try out clay modelling with a group of friends. Diana will do hand casting for family groups and has even cast babies’ feet.
It all started when my mum gave me some play dough, just flour and water, for me to play with when I was a child. I loved my felt tips pens for drawing and from these small beginnings I have forged a career in Art. I did an Art Foundation course at Winchester School of Art and went on to do a degree in Fine Art, Sculpture at Cheltenham College of Art. Newbury is my home town and I returned after graduation and worked in publishing and for Vodafone but always with a studio practice alongside these money-earning jobs. The Open Studio scheme brought clients to see me at work in my studio. Lots of local exhibitions has meant that my name is well known. With a new studio located in my garden the day is spent absorbed in work on commissions, preparation for exhibitions or teaching.
Art is both special and everyday. You might like to commission something to celebrate an occasion or commemorate the life of a special person. Your reflection and absorption in a work of art will lift you up both in looking, owning and practicing art. I am drawn to shape and form, I like anatomy and love animals. It’s just great to start a project and work with clients closely. We have an initial consultation to decide the subject, material, budget then regular meetings ensure that every step along the way is approved and enjoyed.
If you want to have a go yourself then coming to classes will enable you to use materials, tools and facilities and gain knowledge which is both therapeutic and satisfying.
“Diana’s relaxed and friendly style has helped me get back into pottery – more than 30 years after last enjoying this at school I am now creating all manner of pots, bowls on the wheel each week and a growing group of friends and family are all asking for a handmade creation from me! Thoroughly recommend Diana, with great facilities in a well-appointed studio along with practical help and advice to give you the confidence to experiment, make mistakes but ultimately create work to be proud of. Great, satisfying, therapeutic, have-a-go hobby in a relaxed and friendly environment.” James, Newbury

“Diana is a wonderful teacher who is endlessly encouraging and enthusiastic. She has the great ability to offer incisive help when I need it without ever taking over in any way. I absolutely love coming to her class.” Sally, Bucklebury
“We all had a fabulous night with Diana at her Prosecco and Clay evenings. We arrived to find the kettle was on, the Prosecco was poured and we could sit down to a blissful couple of hours of total immersion in what we were doing. It was a lovely way to catch up with friends and enjoy some creativity! Would highly recommend it for a small group which wants to do something fun, educational, relaxing and creative together!” Victoria, Newbury
“In June 2017, after my husband gained enthusiasm for pottery by watching the TV show The Pottery Throw Down, I booked an evening with Diana. My husband and I were there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. She welcomed us with a bottle of Prosecco and flowers on the table – a lovely touch! We spent an evening learning to use a potters wheel and had a second session a few weeks later to paint and glaze our pots. We found Diana to be extremely patient, friendly and informative. We have since booked a sculpting party for our son’s 8th birthday in Feb 2018 and he and his friends thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Once again Diana showed amazing patience with the children aged between seven and nine. She helped them all individually and they all left feeling extremely proud of their creations. We very much hope to see Diana again in the future and would thoroughly encourage anyone to spend an evening in her company learning a new skill.” Alexis, Newbury
“Having never done ceramics before, Diana’s classes have opened my eyes. Her new studio is a lovely, warm environment and has all that you need to make your creation. Diana is cool, calm and informative; her passion and talent only enthuses you more. She is open to all ideas and willing to help you no matter what your project is, the only restrictions are your own imagination or if it’s too big for the kiln!” Georgina, Lambourn
