Donnington Grove

First of all, it’s not just for golfers

Discover Donnington Grove Hotel & Country Club, set just outside Newbury in an oasis of calm and with dining facilities, accommodation and sporting activities ideal for any occasion.

Designed in 1763 in the “Strawberry Hill Gothic” style, the 250-year-old building has one of the most intriguing histories in the country, being the home of former trend-setter, style icon and crony of the Prince Regent, Beau Brummell (often credited with introducing the suit and cravat for men) and the femme fatale Daisy Fellowes.

That said, we do have a pretty excellent course – see below for details. But there’s more to Donnington Grove than that…

Beau’s Restaurant

In honour of its most celebrated owner, the completely refurbished restaurant at Donnington Grove, which opened in 2018, has been named Beau’s.

This augments the already stunning range of food available at Donnington Grove, including breakfast, lunch, afternoon teas (with or without a celebratory glass of champagne) dinner and, of course, traditional Sunday lunch. Our menu changes regularly and includes the best seasonal produce we can source. Contact us to find out what we have on offer for your special meal and to discuss any special requirements you might have.

The Hotel

Today, the privately-run hotel is graced with many features, including hand painted wallpapers, tapestries and antique furniture, that remind us of the luxury that its inhabitants must have once enjoyed. The restaurant has large picture windows so diners can eat against a backdrop of picturesque grounds. There is also is a large patio which commands splendid views of the lake.

Donnington Grove has a wide range of guest accommodation from comfortable, functional and well-appointed single and double rooms to luxurious suites. Each is suffused with the charm and elegance that characterizes every corner of this remarkable property.

Business and Pleasure

If you are planning an event – from an intimate party for two to a celebration for two hundred – our team can tailor our menus to your requirements and help make your dream day a reality.

If it’s business that’s on your mind then our range of rooms can cater for meetings of a dozen people to conferences of over 100. Please get in touch to discuss your own specific needs.

Golf

Golf is perhaps the thing we are most famous for: and justly so. It’s easy to book a round on our superbly maintained championship-standard course. We have a range of membership packages, a well-stocked shop and professional tuition on hand. We welcome individual bookings as much as we do larger events such as business golf days and society outings.

The estate at Donnington Grove is stunningly beautiful and is traversed by the River Lambourn, a delightful chalk stream river with a bright gravel bottom and gin-clear water ideal for fly fishing. We stock the river with trout; while out of season (which is from April to September), grayling are a popular catch. Call the hotel for booking details. If you just want to practise your casting we allow this on the lake, too.

Fishing

One of the Donnington Grove Estate’s hidden treasures is that the truly beautiful River Lambourn runs through it. This absolutely delightful chalk stream is perfect for a laid back fly fishing break in Berkshire: not too wide, bright gravel bottom and gin clear water. To put it simply, this is the perfect territory for stalking the wild brown trout in picturesque surroundings.

Fishing is available on the river for a length of approximately half a mile. It responds well to both traditional dry and wet fly tactics throughout the season. A good head of wild browns are supplemented with carefully stocked, locally reared fish to provide a first class sport when you go fly fishing in Berkshire.

Clay Shooting

We offer clay shooting all through the year for individual introductions and tuition as well as group shoots and competitions, great for team building, stag and hen parties. Why not come and test your aim?

If you are planning a visit to the historic town of Newbury there is plenty on offer in the area and Donnington Grove is your perfect place to return to after exploring. On our doorstep are a variety of attractions, including shopping in Newbury, The Living Rainforest, Sandaham Memorial Chapel, the Watermill Theatre, Highclere Castle, Donnington Castle and Newbury Racecourse. Slightly further afield, attractions include the Ridgeway, the Uffington White Horse, the Savernake Forest and the Lambourn Downs.
