Hungerford Churches Together hosted their first ever Pentecost Picnic Party on the High Street on Sunday 4th June. In the best tradition of these events, heavy showers did not deter the 50 or so picnickers – gazebos kept (some of) the rain off, and as people moved into the United Reformed Church for the celebration service, the weather lifted and became a lovely evening!
Members of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, St Lawrence’s Church, the Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church took part in the service, and entertainment was provided by Word Puppets. Three fluffy sheep puppets turned “Barbara Ann” by The Beach Boys into “Baa baa baa, baa baa we’re lambs”.
Pentecost is the third major festival of the Christian year, after Christmas and Easter. It falls fifty days (seven weeks) after Easter and is the root of the national Whitsun or Spring Bank Holiday. It is celebrated as the birthday of the church, and hence a good day for a party.
