On Sunday 25 June the Newbury branch of the Royal British Legion, Newbury Town and West Berkshire Councils joined together in the Market Place for a combined Armed Forces 2017 commemoration, jointly led by the Chairman of West Berkshire Council, Cllr Quintin Webb, and the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr David Fenn.
There was a formal procession from the Royal British Legion premises in Pelican Lane to the Town Hall at 10.15am and assembled in the Market Place where they were supported by President of Newbury Royal British Legion, Mrs Janine Westropp; the High Sheriff of Berkshire, Sarah Scrope; the Mayor of Hungerford, Cllr Keith Knight; The Right Honorable, Richard Benyon MP; Councillors and other dignitaries for the flag raising and a service of thanksgiving led by Rev Keri Eynon.
The parade was joined by Royal British Legion Members, Veterans, Regimental Associations, Cadet Forces Units Armed Forces, Watership Brass, Royal British Legion & Association Standards.
Following the service those attending were invite back to the Newbury Branch of the Royal British Legion for refreshments.
The Mayor of Newbury, Councillor David Fenn said “We were so pleased to participate in this service of thanksgiving to mark Armed Forces Week 2017 and to to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. We want to ensure the contribution of our veterans is never forgotten and to show our gratitude to our Armed Forces.”
