The Longest Solstice Knit at Avebury

Swindon stitch and bitch crafting group invite you to join them at Avebury on Wednesday 20th June 2018 for the longest knitting day! The 21st June is the summer solstice so they will make the most of the daylight hours spending time knitting.

The group will be travelling by the bus from Swindon Bus Station and they will be knitting on the bus all the way to Avebury. At Avebury they will base themselves under The Wishing Tree to spend the day knitting and crocheting hanging spirals.

How to Get Involved

All local knitters are welcome to join them. They will have enough yarn to share but if you can please bring your own 4mm hooks or 4mm knitting needles. See below for directions to The Wishing Tree. If you would like to have contact details for a group member before you head off to join them please leave a comment below.

Dressability

The ladies will be gifting their spirals to visitors in return for donations for Dressability who provide a low-cost clothing alteration and dressmaking service for people with disabilities, and Swindon Stitch and Bitch will be collecting donations from their longest knit to Dressability because it’s such a fantastic charity.

Swindon Stitch and Bitch work closely with Dressability making woollen garments for Swindon’s elderly who find themselves choosing between heating and eating during the winter months. Through Dressability, Swindon Stitch and Bitch have received beautiful yarns from John Lewis. Tracey Major of Swindon Stitch and Bitch explains “We were so honoured that Dressability had asked us to work with them and we were thrilled with the amazing yarn from John Lewis, lots of the yarns are our favourite brands and will make gorgeous and in some case luxurious garments to wrap the elderly up in this winter; they really will be keeping warm in style.”

Tracey Major said, “Our group couldn’t get together on the 9th of June when it was World Knit in Public day, so we have decided to celebrate the summer solstice instead in yarn twirling style. We thought we’d make twirls because they are easy to make and look amazing and can be hung from anything.”

Swindon Stitch and Bitch are hoping that visitors will come and visit them at Avebury and either help them knit, or donate their loose change and take away a knitted twirl with them.

They also want to make them more aware of Dressability and the fabulous work they do.

Weekly Stitch and Bitch Meetings

If any wants to to join the knitting group, they meet up every Monday from 7.30pm at the Manor Farm Pub in Haydon Wick, just off Westfield Way. They are a group of about 16, who sit just as you go in the door near the bar – they are easy to spot!

How to Find The Wishing Tree at Avebury

To find the wishing tree, take the chalk path up the hill in the field with the stones and there is a gate right next to the tree on Herepath or Green Street.
