Latest news from John O’Gaunt School
Work experience is high on the Year 10 agenda and they recently had a taste of ‘Employers Expectations’ when four local employers came and gave them an experience of what is expected of employees, dress codes and ethics, interview tips and an open question time. Following on from that each student had a 20-minute interview with a local business associate who had given up their time to let the students experience what a real interview is like. Whilst this was happening, they also worked on a ‘Dragons Den’ type challenge, having chosen a topic from ‘Develop an App to enhance the life of teachers and/or students’, ‘Redesign the school hall and Bear Grylls Inspiration Centre’ to make it functional for all users, or ‘Make JOG green’ considering all ways that it could be more eco-friendly. The students rose to the challenge very well and in the afternoon presented to a group of ‘Dragons – Business Volunteers’ who put them through their paces.
The Year 10 students responded well to the day, learning a lot about themselves, team work and the need for preparation.
Well done to the JOGY8 Rock Band, who opened the Berkshire Maestros Spring concert on Friday 16 March. They put on a great performance and were a real credit to the school. Band members are: Wilf Waldon (guitar/soloist), Dan Piper (Drums), Maddy Lewis (soloist), Libby Hopkins, Ebony Russell, Isis Rota and Emilia Thatcher.
Pope featuring Toby Quinn, Elvis Lee, Billy Chester and Amelie Edwards from Yr 11 (and Adam Quinn from Yr 12 at St Bart’s) are doing well on the local gig circuit. They were well received at Walkabout Newbury recently and will be playing at Froxfield Music & Beer Festival on Saturday 9 June and the Garstonbury festival on Saturday 14 July.
Congratulations to the awesome Year 10 Netball team who came 1st in their District Tournament last night with the final ranking being: 1st – JOG, 2nd – St Gabs, 3rd – St Bart’s, 4th – Trinity, 5th – Kennet, 6th – Little Heath
A great result for the Year 10 boys’ football team also securing a victory against a much larger school in a hard fought 2-1 win against Kennet. Very well done boys – fantastic effort!
Congratulations to Phoebe Digweed who represented John O Gaunt School in the British Schools National Championship 2018 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield and became the National Champion in the Girls Year 8 and 9 Under 48kg group!
8B Tech 1 had a mission to complete in Food technology. Having spent the past two terms understanding about food science and nutrition, alongside their practical lessons cooking bread, quiche, brownies and spring rolls, the depth test was to create a dish of their choice. They produced a wonderful array of challenging dishes.
Finn Apiafi, Harry Ackrill, Sophie Orchard, Thomas Mason, Josh Dopson and Alisha Hards were absolute stars of the day, and the Head came in to view and sample some of the outcomes. He enthused about the quality of the food and the students were extremely focused and proud of their creations.
