Congratulations to Penny Post reader Matt Brookfield for stepping forward to make a difference.
Matt lives in Woodlands St Mary and was looking for a way to make a valuable contribution to the local community when he heard about our appeal for more retained fire fighters in Lambourn.
Listen to his interview here (from approx 37:00) with Penny and Brian on 4LEGS Radio. Matt describes his experience at the Have a Go day, the fitness levels required to join the fire service, the incredible team spirit and support, the exams, interviews, medical and training involved.
Matt also describes what it is like when you get you get ‘a shout’ as a retained fire fighter and what the implications are for an employer having a retained fire fighter as a member of staff.
To find out more click here and do pop into the Lambourn Fire Station any Monday night 6.30 – 9.30pm (on occasional weeks if the fire engine isn’t there it means they are away training at another station).
It is a paid position earning an average of £500 per month.

The fire service needs people of all sizes – you don’t have to be big and super fit.
