Hungerford’s Freedom of the Town Awards 2018

On 22 May, Norman Barr, Chris Scorey and Catherine Wooliston were honoured at a ceremony in the Town Hall at which they were bestowed with the Freedom of the Town of Hungerford award. The presentation was made  by the High Sheriff of Berkshire, Graham Barker, in front of an audience of councillors, Hungerford Mayor Helen Simpson, past recipients, civic dignitaries, families and friends.

Chris Scorey

Chris has lived in Hungerford since 1977. He and his wife Liz have two daughters and seven grand-children. He worked for Rochford Thompson, starting as a Software Engineer in 1976 and ending as managing director and owner. He semi-retired in 2013.

Community/voluntary roles include: being a Trustee of the Town & Manor Charity for five years; Chairman of Hungerford Tennis Club for 10 years (helping with a large growth in membership); leading the team for the 2010 Town Plan for Hungerford, followed by the Refresh in 2013; has recently joined the Hungerford 2036 Project Team which is helping to create a Neighbourhood Plan for Hungerford.

Catherine Wooliston

Catherine is very well known and respected as a former midwife in the area for over 30 years. She has lived in Hungerford for nearly 40 years.

Community/voluntary roles include: being a volunteer for CHAIN; being the Village Agent for Hungerford for the last five years; volunteering to provide a Christmas lunch to those who would otherwise be alone at Christmas; being involved in Sovereign Housing’s All Aboard group.

Norman Barr

Norman in a longstanding businessman in the town, first at Barr’s timber and for 36 years at the Tutti Pole. Joined the fire brigade in 1960 and was made leading fireman in 1961 and sub-officer in 1974, remained in this post for 20 years until retiring in 1994. He organised fundraising to purchase modern cutting equipment for the fire brigade. He was chairman of the fire social club from 1974.

Community/voluntary roles include: being a Trustee of the Hungerford fire station charity; involved in raising money for the building of the old swimming pool; previously Secretary and Captain of the Cricket Club (and now Life Vice President) and heavily involved in the building of the new pavilion.
