One Million Tiny Plays About Britain

Not so much a slice of life, more a box of delights. This year’s Watermill touring production of Craig Taylor’s One Million Tiny Plays About Britain opened at East Garston Village Hall on Wednesday.

This is an innovative production under the guidance of their new Artistic Director, Paul Hart. Innovation, for which Watermill productions are well regarded, looks to be in good hands.

One Million Tiny Plays About Britain is a tour (see what they did here) around the UK, where the audience earwigs on conversations between a cast of dozens impressively portrayed by just two amazing actors: Emma Barclay and Alec Nicholls. It is fast moving, funny and often with an insightful subtext on human nature and human relationships. The characters morph seemlessly from Archers’ listeners in Richmond to Ladies of a certain age in a Hungerford tea room, through to football fans in the gents and clubbing geordies. The East Garston audience particularly enjoyed the portrayal of Yoof Culture and laughed shamelessly at some not quite PC jokes.

Observational comedy at its best with a light touch and maybe just an occasional hint of Ayckbourne cynicism on the nature of marriage.
