Summer Reading Challenge 2018 @ All West Berkshire Libraries
Aug 22 @ 8:00 am – 9:00 am

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 2018

If you have a child aged 4-11 years, look out for the invitations going out through schools for them to join Mischief Makers, our Summer Reading Challenge for 2018.

Children need to be library members, then sign up in any West Berks library to receive their ‘treasure map’ reading log. Over the summer, they can collect stickers and other incentives for borrowing and reading library books – at least six books by the end of September to receive a certificate, golden medal and voucher for a free child visit to Beale Wildlife Park, near Pangbourne.

The challenge is produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries across the country. This summer we’re excited to be working with Beano magazine in their 80th anniversary year, so watch out for Dennis, Gnasher and friends as children collect their stickers and solve their treasure clues.

The Summer Reading challenge is endorsed by the Department for Education. It’s FREE to take part. for more information and to get started, please ask in your local library.

Family Interactive Flower and Crafting weekend @ Crofton Beam Engines
Aug 25 @ 10:30 am – 4:30 pm
Family Interactive Flower and Crafting weekend @ Crofton Beam Engines | Crofton | England | United Kingdom

Head to Crofton for a celebration of creativity and abundance over the August bank holiday weekend!

Last year, Crofton Beam Engines near Marlborough, secured National Lottery funding to renovate part of its Grade 1 listed building, to develop new visitor facilities and add exciting new exhibits. As well as the regular ‘steamings’ which see the 200 & 150 year old beam engines in action pumping water for the canal, recent events at Crofton have included story trails, First World War exhibits and a pop up museum. The National Lottery funding will enable more creative events and enjoyment of the wonderful site and engines by a range of new audiences.

This month, families and visitors are invited to join in with some ‘hands on’, have-a-go crafting. Children from pre-school age can make a wall hanging to decorate Crofton’s learning space, there will be willow flower making, bouquetmaking, charcoal drawing and printmaking. Workshops will be held over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, 25th 26th and 27th of August.

In addition to fun for the children, there will be flower displays from Marlborough Floral Club and a demonstration of wood turning from the Bowler Hatted Turner, as well as cake and fruit stalls.

The Engineman’s Rest Cafe will be open as usual for lunches, drinks and snacks and the Old Smithy Bar will be open for a range of local beers and ciders.

Entry to the Grounds and the event is free of charge and is open 10-30am to 4-30pm over the three day Bank Holiday. There is an admittance charge to go inside the Engine room and see the Steam engines in operation.

Crofton is just outside Marlborough, use SN8 3DW in your Sat-Nav.
